Running with Newton Kismet Again

Back Wearing My Go-To Shoes, Newton

Newton is my Go-To Shoes for the past few years.   The five-lugs gave me an added push to run faster and go longer.  It’s light on the foot and really helps you develop the more efficient mid-foot landing.  The Newton Kismet gives you a more cushioned ride, which makes a perfect entry level shoes when you try to adopt to the Newton Technology. #FeelNewton

Feel Newton

Gym Session with Newton Kismet

Let’s start with an interesting piece of trivia.  I’ve covered around 435 kilometers of racing mileage in 2015 and over 70% of those mileage was with Newton as my race shoes.  Yes, Newton is my Go-To Shoes and if you get to add my training mileage that’s more than a thousand kilometers wearing Newton Shoes for the year.  That also meant getting to try a lot of Newton Shoes.  One of my favorites would be Newton Kismet since it’s the easiest shoes to get used to in the Newton Line.

Leading our pace group using Newton Kismet Shoes.

When I started 2016, I went on to try different running shoes just to give me a different feel of the road.  The first shoes had me limping over the last 5 kilometers since the toe area felt tight on the latter part of the race.  The second shoes had my arch sore because it lacked arch support.  That’s the thing with shoes, not every shoe can work for you.  I went back to Newton with the Kismet.  I love the teal colorway. It really stands out.  I expected being back to that  getting-to-used-to phase once again since it’s been months since I last run wearing Newtons. It always takes time to get used to especially since it uses a different technology.  The first run I had with Newton Kismet was a few weeks ago and it felt natural.  The transition was painless especially since the Kismet had a 4.5 mm heel to toe drop which meant that it had a lot more cushioning.

Leading our pack!

The first real test of Newton Kismet when I was part of the pacer for Run United 1.  The plan was to do a run walk style to teach runners on proper pacing. The run part was exciting since we were doing it at a very fast pace.  That’s thanks a lot to the 5 lugs that gives an added push to the toe for faster and longer strides.  The 5 lugs aligns perfectly to metatarsal plates of your feet giving you a better feel of the surface and more relaxed landings. The weight of the Newton Kismet is 9.7 ounces, which is a bit heavier than other Newton models.   It can still give you a faster cadence and a lightweight feel because of that added push.

It’s also my partner on my night training runs.

The flashy colorway with its 360 degrees reflectivity helped a lot during my night run since it can make me safer and more visible at night.  It has an extended medial bridge for added stability on the foot strikes as well additional support to the arch.  When it comes to the toe area, there’s a lot of room to move so it won’t feel tight even on the latter part of long runs when the feet starts to expand.

Night Visibility with 360 degrees reflectivity.

It has a seamless finish so you can use it with or without socks, without worrying about friction burns or irritations.  Another important feature is that it’s made of breathable materials, which can really prevent your feet from overheating especially with the numerous foot strikes when you run and the warm weather.  It keeps your feet cool and comfortable.

Feel Newton!!!

Which Newton is right for you? It really depends on your foot type and how you pronate.  Newton Kismet is among the safest option especially when you are still trying to get used to the mid-foot landing and push of the toe transitions.  Once you get used to it, you can shift to the lighter models as it can give you more speed.  For me, I also use Newton Distance and once I got used to it, I can go at a faster cadence because of its lighter weight.   Either way, you’re in for a shoes that’s gonna help you develop the proper landing and more efficient strides.  It can also be perfect for regular days especially when you have to walk or stand a lot during the day. The additional cushioning can really keep you comfortable during the day.

With Leo Libuna of Newton Running Philippines

Another product I like with Newton is there bag.  The Newton Bag is a do-it-all bag as it can be a sling bag, back pack and even a gym bag.  It’s spacious and it has a compartment inside for the shoes.  It felt so comfortable that I also used it to carry my stuff when I covered Century Tuna Ironman 70.3. It had enough room for my laptop camera and several sets of changing clothes.

It can also be a walking shoes because it’s so comfortable.

Newton Running Shoes is available at Runnr Stores, Toby’s and Maximus Athlete’s Shop Cafe.

#TaleOfTheTrail Mount Kalugong and Mount Yangbo (La Trinidad, Benguet)

Mount Yangbo

Nature gives us a humbling experience.  It’s the time we realize that the world in its simplest form is naturally beautiful.  Mount Kalugong gives you a several rock formation overlooking the La Trinidad Valley while Mount Yangbo offers a higher and majestic view of the area. #TaleOfTheTrail

The Rock Formations at Mount Kalugong

If there’s one objective I had when I started writing The Tale Of The Trail. It was to encourage people to enjoy the trails.  It’s not only for the fittest but it can be for everybody.  Baguio-Benguet is rich in scenic trails that’s both challenging and beautiful. We were on the lookout on trails nearby Baguio and we found two Mountain Trails in the area in Mount Kalugong and Mount Yangbo.  Mount Kalugong was known for its rock formation while Mount Yangbo had that large track of brownish greenlands with an overlooking view of La Trinidad.  The trail starting point for Mount Kalugong was at KM 8 in La Trinidad beside Benguet Memorial Services.  I was with Jazz Runner Rene and Running Atom who came along with his family. It’s definitely gonna be an adventure since the only part of the route we know was the starting point.

The Map and Elevation

Map powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sports

Elevation Profile is powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sports

The route starts at the foot of Kalugong Road.  It starts with a steep climb on paved roads for about a kilometer with an elevation gain of 120 meters.  After a kilometer of climbing, you know enter Mount Kalugong Park, which has a lot of rock formations as well as picnic grounds.  The trail resumes on a slightly rolling terrain for the next 3 kilometers to reach Tawang area.  There’s a short strip of road before the climbs resume at kilometer 5. There’s a steep climb to Mount Yangbo of about 500 meters with an elevation gain of 160 meters.  It takes another kilometer of descent to exit the trail to Ambiong – Lubas – Tawang Road.

Trekking Mount Kalugong and Mount Yangbo

Off to Mount Kalugong

We started at around 11 AM in the morning heading to Mount Kalugong.  Mount Kalugong was just a kilometer away from the foot of Kalugong Road. The catch is that it’s really steep. We took it a few walking breaks at a time until we’ve reached Mount Kalugong Park.  This part is challenging especially when you’re not used to climbs so my advise is to take it slow and easy.

After a short climb, you’re in the park.

Just follow the road and you’ll get there. Along the road you can already see some rock formation. There’s a registration fee when you enter Mount Kalugong at P50 per person, which allows you access to the facilities of the park.  It’s a family friendly location where you can hold picnics and kids can play at a cooler climate and a higher altitude.

That bouncy feeling running on tires.

There are two aspects of Mount Kalugong, one is the rock formations and the next is the park.  If you take the road on the right, you get to see the different rock formations. The formations were really impressive and gives you an overlooking view of the La Trinidad.  It’s risky going from one rock formation to another but if you can brave that part you’re in for an awesome view and photo.

The La Trinidad view from the rock.

Seeing formations like this is really breathtaking.  It tells you so much of the story how the mountains and the rock formations were formed through the years.   The area gives you a really good vantage point of La Trinidad. It’s a largely residential area so you get to see some congestion but it’s still great seeing things at this area.

Now tell mo how do I get down from here?

You have all the variety of rock and ridge photos around Mount Kalugong. I managed to climb one of the taller rocks and it was an exhilarating experience. It’s rock climbing without a harness.  By the way, it’s called Mount Kalugong because one of the rocks is shaped like a hat (Kalugong in ilocan0).  This area has also a trail area heading to the park area but if you want a safer option then just go back the previous route and enter the entrance of the park.

I’m always a kid at heart.

The park is the perfect family friendly spot. It has swings, picnic tables, huts, hammocks and other facilities.  It also has a canteen though they only have snacks and a few drinks.  It’s like Camp John Hay picnic grounds at a different location and altitude.  It’s not a long hike to the park so it’s perfect for family with kids to hang out for a good bonding time outdoors. We had lunch at the picnic grounds.

Me vs the uphill.

We also were told that there was an access point from Mount Kalugong to Mount Yangbo.  So when you see an uphill trail from the park.  Yes, that dreaded uphill climb you hate to take.  Well don’t take that road, it’s not the trail heading to Mount Yangbo but it’s about 200-300 meter climb that can give you a different vantage point of La Trinidad. The view is beautiful there though.  There’s a trail parallel to the that uphill climb and its flat so that’s the right road.

Rock formations all around

The trail is about 3 kilometers heading to Tawang area. The trail is rolling but it’s run-able. It’s actually fun running this part with the softer surface and the rich scenery. There’s different surfaces you get to experience from mud tracks, rocks and grass. There are also a few technical part of the trails.

It’s a beautiful trail.

We’ve blitz the first part of the trail which had a moderately rolling terrain.  After about 2 kilometers the trail goes on a short ascent. There was a view deck towards the tail end of the climb.  It gave another view of La Trinidad.  You can also see Mount Yangbo from the trail since it has a relay tower on top of it.

There’s always a good view at the top with the trail masters Running Atom and Jazz Runner Rene.

After the climb is the descent to Tawang area which is the entry point of Mount Yangbo.  There were steep parts but it’s generally a safe trail.  You can feel that Mount Yangbo was so close from here yet you know it’s still one steep climb away.  There was a small cemetery along the route.  We excited Tawang Area.

The road heading to the entry point of Mount Yangbo.

There are several entry points from Tawang Area.  We walked around a short 500 meters in Lubas – Tawang – Ambiong Road and saw an entry point.  There’s also another entry point about a kilometer away too.  We took the first entry point we saw, which was the steeper option in the climb. It is just about 500 meters to the peak but you had to take on about 160 meters of vertical ascents.  That’s a lung busting climb in my books.

That steep lung busting climb.

The thing about steep climbs is you should just take it a chunk at a time.  I would take about a 50-100 meter of climbs then rest a bit and do the drill until I reach the part.  The good part with the rest break is that you get to see the view from atop La Trinidad as well as see the nearby mountains.

Grou-fie break.

We also had a grou-fie break. A grou-fie is another way of saying, let’s take a break.  You had the mountain view as your backdrop and there were rocky cliffs too.  The higher you get the better the view.  We were amazed when we reached the top.

It was a wide track of greenish brown surface that you’d love to run.  It has panoramic views from the one overlooking La Trinidad to the different mountains around the area. There’s a registration fees of P30 for the area.  There were also available horses if you want to do horseback riding around the wide mountain range.  There were a lot of spaces where you can have picnic mats and enjoy the place.  You just get mesmerized by the different sights around.

At the Top of Mount Yangbo.

There are so many alternatives going to the area with different trails and different looks.  The place just humbles you and makes you feel that the you are just a tiny speck in this awesome world and that nature in its raw form is just beautiful.

I’m just a speck in this awesome world and I love it.

From the top, we saw several options as our exit points.  We wanted to try a new trail that would lead us to the lower part of the road but we ended up taking the easier exit point, which is around 800 meters to call it an adventure.

This is a view from our house in Baguio

Just a piece of trivia. The photo above is the view from our house in Baguio located at New Lucban.  If you see closely to the top left, you can see a relay tower, that’s Mount Yangbo.  In the front part of the same area, you see some rock formations, that’s Mount Kalugong.  It took me a visit to these two mountains to realize that I’ve been seeing these two mountains since I was a kid.

#TaleOfTheTrail Sierra Madre Trails (Tanay, Rizal)

The Beauty of the Morning Sun on at Tanay, Rizal

With the Sierra Mountain Range as their backdrop, Tanay, Rizal has a lot of scenic trails. These trails rewards you with an overlooking view of the mountain ranges, crystal clear river crossing and really scenic waterfalls. It’s gonna give you an adrenaline rush as you breeze through its descents, test your wills on the climbs and bring out the kid in you on the rivers and waterfalls.

#TaleOfTheTrail

The Sierra Madre Mountain Range around me.

I haven’t been on a trail for over a month so I convinced Rene of Jazzrunner.com and his friend Jun for another round at Sierra Madre Trails.  Last year, we visited the trails in this area but there can be many variations of trail in this area. There’s so many ways to mix and match the trails in this area. Explore, get lost and appreciate. That’s the game plan.  We met up around QC before 5 am, had breakfast along the way and before 6:30 am, we were good to go. Anytime I’m at the trails always spells F – U – N in my books.

The Map and Elevation

Map Powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sports

Elevation Profile is powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sports

The route start at Pico De Pino in Marilaque Highway and had around a kilometer worth of road before entering the trail head.  The next 6 kilometers is a descent of about 300 meters of elevation.  The route shifts to a steep climb on the next kilometer with an elevation gain of about 100 meters before a sharp descent on the next kilometer with an elevation loss of about 190 meters.  The rest of the course is along flatter terrain navigating from one waterfall to another and back at the town area.

Trekking the Sierra Madre Trails

The Usual Trail Suspects

We arrived at our jump off point at Tanay, Rizal in a newly opened restaurant called Pico de Pino instead of the usual Ten Cents to Heaven Access Point at the highway.  Since the highway is at an higher altitude, you already get to appreciate the surrounding views of the Sierra Madre mountain range around you.  I also appreciate the place for the cold morning breeze and the clean surroundings.  We had a really easy chit chat pace on the first kilometer which is a rolling stretch of roads before the trail head.

The mountains and the clouds always make up a good background.

The trail had a mix of paved road and dirt roads.  At this time of the day, the clouds were surrounding the mountain tops. It was majestic at this perspective.  The place is already being developed and it gives you a feel of a less crowded Tagaytay with the cool climate and the surrounding views.  At about 1.5 kilometer, we saw a new trail / road being constructed and it had the perfect view.

This is our playground!!!

The next 4 kilometers were downhill that had us switching from dirt roads, paved roads to single track trails.  The beauty of the descent is that it can really bring out the daredevil in you since you can really blitz this trail.  Trail running is fun when you get to brave the downhill.

Trail Running is Fun!!!

The trails are softer on the knees This really helps a lot since downhill running can really give the knee a lot of pounding.  The trails were wide enough to run with a wider stance to keep your balance and was solid enough to give you a firmer landing spot.  The view shifts from the mountain views to shrubs and forested areas. They also have a local church you get to pass by along the route.

A Local Church along the trails.

After the church, the downhill path resumes.  This would really give runners trying out this course a really good time.  I used to be cautious on descents in the past but for this one I’m bringing out the little Kilian Jornet in me.

Unleashing the little Kilian Jornet in me.

The trails slowly shifts to single tracks and when you see a fork, turn right.  The last time we took this route, we went left and it took us longer to reach the rivers.  The right part of the trail were on single tracks and was running by the side of the river.  There were also bamboo shafts in some of the trail. I was hoping the Kung-fu Panda would pop up on one of the bushes.

Taking a rest on this awesome rock formation.

The descent were on its final part and it was shifting to be a more technical trail but one thing I learned during the last Nuun Dirt School was plan your trail like a chess match so visualize your steps several steps ahead.  This would help you maintain a bit of speed and keep your balance along the way.

Getting lost in nature.

The trail was beside a silently flowing creek, which you could easily see at some access points.  The end of the descent led us to some rice fields besides a creek of water.  We went towards the trail instead of going up. Spoiler alert: This is the point were we took the wrong turn so we had to find a new way out of the trail.  We went forward and here’s a funny picture of the Jazzrunner evading a pig on the route.

Jazzrunner vs Pig.

After this, we asked directions to the town proper and ended up taking a fresh set of trails. It turned out we found a better set of trails and we’d live to tell you about it as soon as we found our way out.  We followed the trail and saw a lot of scenic views of the mountains.

It’s just humbling to be surrounded by the raw beauty of nature.

Rene and Jun had frequented this trail but the areas we are now uncharted territories even for them. We just followed the trail which now shifts to a slightly rolling ascent. The trails were a bit raw and had a lot of tall uncut grass along the trail so we had to squeeze ourselves in this areas.  Aside from the scenic mountain view, we found this really beautiful creek along the route.

Beside Crystal Clear Waters.

After the creek at around the 7th kilometer, we started our uphill climb.  The climb was short but it was steep. In the middle of the climb, we saw some locals and we asked for directions going to the town proper.  It was at this point that we got the confirmation we knew about a kilometer ago, we were lost. One of the local suggested to make our way back which would be around 1.5 to 2 kilometers already.  The other local named Rene offered to accompany us.  Rene was fast on the trail so we had no choice but move fast on the steep ascent over the next 500 meters.

With the Trail Master Rene Villarta (Jazzrunner)

We took a break at the house of Rene before he pointed the direction to the trail exiting the area.  There was a short climb from their house. At the peak of the climb it was a really wonderful vantage point as you see the surrounding mountain ranges in the area.

The views are just majestic.

From the top, it was about a kilometers worth of steep descent and I really enjoyed this descent. I was in the middle of the ridge running on single track trails with the view of the Sierra Madre Mountain range at both side.  Running on steep single track is a lot tougher and challenging but it helps that you go in curves or S direction throughout the trails as it gives you more balance.

Running Downhill 101

It was a breeze at this stretch. It was exhilarating too.  The soft trails was not rough on the knees and the ground was firm enough to take advantage of gravity on the descent.  After the long descent, we headed out to the town proper at Laiban.  This was a familiar place as Brooks Run Happy 3, which I joined a few years ago also passed by this town.

Approaching the end of the trail.

After finding our way out, I was still game for some trail time so I went with Jun to chase waterfalls while Rene stayed at the store in Laiban.  We were trying to track the falls based on how we recalled the trail when we run this place a few years ago but it looked different now and instead of taking the easier way, we ended up passing by the river.

I love river crossings.

Instead of going left we ended up going straight to the river. The river was really clear and fresh. We followed the river only to head back to the plantation nearby.  A local named Jason realizing that we’re clueless on what we were looking for volunteered to tour us around the place. Our second Good Samaritan of the day.  From the river, he lead us to the road beside the river and there it was the easier route to the falls. Our first stop was a popular swimming area here named Puting Bato.

A popular swimming area here – Puting Bato

The route was familiar yet was a bit different. The once grass field surroundings now had plantations around.  The route reminded me of the trail run here two years ago. After a while, we’ve finally hit Mysawa Falls.  Two years ago when we visited the falls, it was a bit dry because of summer so it was really great that there’s more water now.  Jason told us the best time to visit the falls was around February.

Mysawa Falls.

Mysawa falls had a mystical feel because of the white limestone formations around.  It had a basin at the bottom and the deeper part would be around waist to chest deep.  I was happy to see it with more water this time as the last time I was here, it was just the white limestone and a few water puddles. Jason then asked us if we wanted to see Kamaingaran Falls. We automatically said yes.

Kamaingaran Falls

Kamaingaran was about 10-15 minutes away from Mysawa Falls.  Kamaingaran Falls was mystical, magical and really majestic. It had crystal clear waters which was really cold and is really deep (probably 8-10 feet or more) on some spots. Kamaingaran also has several levels with different areas where you can take a dip.

Another level of Kamaingaran Falls.

The area is a bit cooler and covered.  It’s a bit hidden but it was a scenic delight for trail runners, trekkers and those wanting a good cold swim.  There were different layers of the falls.  The second layer had several basins where you can swim and there was a part that you get to see the water falling from atop the mountain.   Who could resist a good dip in the natural pool like this, not me.

Yes, I couldn’t resist taking a dip at Kamaingaran falls.

The water was fresh, clear and really cold. After about a 13-14 kilometers of being in the trails, this was a refreshing reward.  After a short dip, we then headed back to Laiban area where we got a motorcycle heading back to the town proper.  From Laiban area, it would still be about 7-8 kilometers with several more river crossings and about 500 meters of elevation before reaching the highway.  It was a nerve-wracking ride as we fell twice because of the rocky path.  It was nothing major as we were able to cushion our fall well.  We then decided to just walk off the remaining part of the trail to the highway.

The result is a range of products that assures maximum performance, designed for freedom along the off-beaten track—THE SALOMON S-LAB SERIES.

First up is the S-Lab SONIC, Salomon’s first road racing shoe and top of the line product of the Citytrail line meant for city urban roadrunners. Whether you’re climbing the stairs, running through a bridge, or enjoying a short route across the park, the S-Lab Sonic was specifically made for the urban setting with its dual-density midsole, which offers exceptional impact protection. Meanwhile, the Contragrip in the outsole provides traction for making tight turns or cutting across urban trails. On the other hand, its stretchable upper with nylon fabric keeps one’s feet comfortable and cool as one races over hot asphalt.

Light and fast, the newest release of the S-Lab Sense Ultra Line presents the 5th edition– Kilian Jornet’s personal choice for being a lightweight trainer for trail running or a racer for ultras. Engineered for performance, the shoes feature a reflective mesh upper that snugly holds the feet in place. Its upper has a breathable mesh and an updated lug design from the previous versions.

Hands down the best choice for an ultra-marathon with the toughest conditions, the S-Lab Sense 5 Ultra SG is a specialist in wet, muddy trails for its aggressive lug pattern with an embedded rock plate that provides supreme traction and protection. Weapon Of Choice: NUUN Electrolyte Enhanced Tablets

Being able to replenish the electrolytes in your system is really important when you train or race.  I use to go with any available electrolyte drink until I got to try NUUN.  NUUN is an electrolyte enhanced tablet that you can just mix with water for your hydration needs.  I found it more practical just bringing the tablets instead of packing bottles of electrolyte drinks especially in remote areas.

NUUN Electrolytes Enhanced Tablets

One of my readers requested me to talk more about NUUN when I spoke shortly of the product on my post on our Mount Makiling Trek (Nuun Dirt School) so here it goes.  Of course, I won’t be talking as an expert on the field of hydration but more on experience for the past 5-6 years of race hydration.  Electrolytes aids your system in water absorption. The goal in hydration is that you don’t feel thirsty and you don’t feel bloated either when you race.  Having better water absorption keeps your body functioning better.

Working Out Powered by NUUN

In a half marathon race that mostly had water, I felt so dry inside after the race that I had to drinks tons of water after the race just to rehydrate.  There was also a time that I had cramps because I was sweating out more than the water I am drinking since there were limited electrolyte drinks in the race.  In another race, I drank too much electrolytes drink and ended up feeling heavy and had bloated hands.  There was an electrolytes overload in my system, which I either had to sweat out or had to pee out of my system.  Electolytes matter in a race or training. Electrolytes will help alleviate cramps, improve muscles function, communicate and burn energy efficiently. It helps prevent dehydration. It’s always best to study the hydration setup before a race so you’ll know if you should bring your own hydration or not.

Mount Makiling Trek Powered by NUUN

Different electrolyte drinks can work during a race and should be part of your routine.   I got to try NUUN a few years ago and here are the reasons why it’s my weapon of choice when it comes to electrolyte drinks.

  1. It’s handy.  Instead of packing a huge stash of bottles, you just bring in one tube, which has 12 tablets in it.  You just add one tablet to 16 oz of water and you have your drink.  That helps a lot especially when you are in remote areas like I usually do when I trek mountains or run in the province.  Not all electrolyte drinks are available in remote areas so it helps to have a handy one.
  2. It has a variety of flavors.  I’ve probably lost count of all the flavors I’ve tried since they have a lot of flavors to choose from.  Variety matters especially when you train frequently or go on a long treks and races.   It’s also low in calorie and sugar.
  3. It gives you more control.  While one tablet is ideal for a 16 oz of water.  You can actually add more water if you feel you need to dilute some of the electrolytes just right for the volume of your activity.  It’s also nice to add a small dose of electrolytes in your regular drink to improve water absorption in your system.
  4. It’s not only for race day.  NUUN three main product-line.  Active is the ideal one for electrolyte replacement when you train or you race. Energy has a bit more caffeine and vitamins for that instant kick of energy.  All-Day gives a daily dose of vitamins for everybody.

Whether it’s to support my active lifestyle or grab my daily dose of vitamins, NUUN works for me.  It’s already a part of my gym bag as the just add water approach saves me a lot of time when I run or workout.  I just place one tablet and water in my hydration bottle and I’m good to go.  It’s also easier to use for my trail adventures as a few tablets can go along way. Even when I’ve consumed my hydration, I can easily replenish with water and a tablet of NUUN.

NUUN Energy also works well for me especially I get to multi task a lot and usually would need the added source of energy and kick in my system.  NUUN All Day is also a good boost to my health especially that you get more prone to getting sick once you are already peaking in your training. It’s also a NUUN for everybody as those vitamins can keep you protected from sickness.

I started using NUUN when I won a free tube in a Christmas party two years ago and I’ve been using it since then.  It’s available at Specialized Concept Store and Dans at Pasong Tamo, Makati, Maximus Athlete’s Shop Cafe at Sparta Complex and at R.O.X. in Bonifacio Global City.

Pacing 10K at Run United 1 2016

10K Pacers Duty Completed – Photo by Art Mendoza

I’ve been pacing for Run United since they started the system over a year ago.  The unique part of this year was they extended the pace groups to the 8 minute per kilometer pace group.  I’m sure this group would live by #ActiveHealthPh mantra of Exceeding Themselves as they get pushed to get pass the 1:20 barrier for 10 kilometers. #2016RunUnited1 #RU1 #ExceedYourself

Run United 1 2016

I’m starting to get more comfortable pacing 10 kilometers at Run United.  I always want to mix up my long and short distance race goals so it won’t feel like a routine already.  The fun part of a 10K run is that you can push yourself harder and not worry about losing steam in the process.  I opted to pace the 10K Group with a 1:20 finish time.  It’s an easy pace but I also believe that there are a lot of runners who needs to be pushed to breach the 1:20 barrier and be confident that they can do better.  I made sure that my legs would be ready for the race by doing regular runs on weekday.   It was also my pleasure to be group with fellow passionate runners Toto Mina, Van Denn Cruz, Gia Estrella and Cleo Armendez.

10K Pacers for 1:20 10K Finish Time

Race Route

Race Route is Powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sports and Movescount

Race Starts at Seaside Boulevard near Bayshore Avenue.  The race heads to J.W. Diokno Boulevard for an out and back and exits Seaside Boulevard for the first 3 kilometers of the race.  The race shifts to Macapagal Boulevard and enters the Vicente Sotto for the next 2 kilometers of the race.  The race then goes to Roxas Boulevard for an out and back for the next 2 kilometers of the race.  The race goes back to Vicente Sotto and Macapagal Boulevard for the next 2 kilometers before heading back to Seaside Boulevard for the last kilometer and the finish.

The Race

Pacing with these guys!!!

The story heading to the race is equally as exciting as the race itself.  I left Makati at 3:45 AM since assembly is at 4 AM and Gun Start is at 5:00 AM.  Since I knew that some portions of Roxas Boulvard would be closed I opted to take EDSA and that’s when the exciting part starts.  It was bumper to bumper upon entering EDSA since the Magallanes Flyover was under construction and only one lance was operational.  I had to bear the burden of the traffic.  I finally arrived at SM Mall of Asia at around 4:35 AM.  The first parking slot I took was full but luckily the indoor parking slot were available.  At 4:45 AM I rushed into the starting line only to realize that it was on the other side of the fence so I tried to find a small opening where I can squeeze myself in to get to the other side.  Does that mean I’m thinner now?  I was able to go to the pacer’s tent, took of my shirt, wore my pacers shirt and rushed in to the starting line where I had about a minute left before gun start.

1:20 Group

I missed the introduction of pacers but at least I was there at the start of the race.  We decided to go on a 4:1 run walk scheme so that the runners would learn how to lengthen their stamina using the walking breaks.  At gun start, we started to run and try to separate the group from the bigger pack so we could have a bigger room to run.  After the first 5 minutes of running, we started with the first walking set and we were explaining to the runners the approach we would be using to cover the distance and the benefits of the run walk set. It lets you control the race and reduces fatigue as you get to recover on the walking sets.  It also allows you to utilize the different leg muscles since walking and running uses different muscle groups.

Having Fun!!! – Photo by Art Mendoza

After the first 2 kilometers, we realized that the 4:1 run walk set is still a bit fast compared to our goal of 8 minute pace. The runners in our group was game with the faster pace though.  We decided to go on a 3:1 run walk set instead.  We had a really fast run set but had a relaxed walking set.  We also try to time the walking sets on water breaks so it would be more efficient.  Of course, we also had to break for our Group photos.

Photo Break!!! Photo by Art Mednoza

We crossed our first 5 kilometers at around the 35 minute mark, which was about 5 minutes earlier than our target time.  Since we were early, we had an additional 1 minute for the walking break to allow the rest of the pack to catch up.  We encouraged the runners to take their nutrition (carb gel) at the half way point of the race.  We went on with the 3:1 Run set until the 6 kilometer mark and u-turn, which we crossed at around 43 minutes.  We shifted to a 2:1 run walk set since we’re still early for our expected time. We also extended the water station break to wait for other runners in the pack.

It’s always fun to run with a group. – Photo by Art Mendoza

The runners still had a lot in their tank as we returned to V. Sotto at the 7th kilometer.  We maintained our pace and used the walking breaks to tell the runners how the run walk set can help them in their runs and how proper pacing can give them a stronger finish.

Finishing Strong – Photo by Day Spotted Photography

1 kilometer to go and we had 13 minutes left to finish the distance, which meant even if we walked the last 1 kilometer, we’d still hit our time.  We encouraged our group to go ahead and finish with an even better time but they wanted to finish the race with us.  We decided to give them one final push and let them finish with a better time.

Running as one with the 1:20 Group! – Photo by Active Pinas.

For the last 400 meters, we went on a straight run allowing our group to finish at an even faster time they expected.  We knew they had it in them to finish strong so we just gave them that added push.  Congrats 1:20 Group, it was great running with you!!!  After our runners crossed, we went back to the course to cheer the remaining runners.

The Bull Runner Half Marathon

Doing the first ever The Bull Runner Half Marathon

Two Years Ago, I always thought crossing my first marathon was my finish line at TBRDM2014. A graduation of sorts for my running career which started in 2010.  It turned out as a beginning of a new chapter and a new life.  It’s life changing in a way that you believe that you are indeed ready for anything.  Two years have passed, I still look forward to being around The Bull Runner Dream Marathoners as their feel good stories unfold in front of me. #TBRSmartDream2016

TBR Smart Dream Marathon 2016

The Finish Line 2 Years Ago

Marathons are always special to me, which is the reason I try to do one one a year or even every other year.  It really entails a lot of preparation especially when you start building up your mileage up to race day.  It’s the preparation that makes you battle ready and stronger as a person as you cross the finish line.  I really had a wonderful experience for my first marathon and that’s because of The Bull Runner Dream Marathon 2014 and I even got to share about my first marathon at Runners’ World.

Runners World 2Q Issue 2014

More than the finish, I got to appreciate the process.  It takes a special kind of craziness. It’s so heartwarming to see the different marathon stories unfold as you see the runners transition from the agony of the run to the sheer bliss of the finish line.  If I had one advice to share, it is to do a marathon. Go through the process and watch yourself evolve to a new person. This year, they had their first The Bull Runner Half Marathon to complement the Marathon event and at first chance, I signed up.  The plan was to join the race, cheer or even pace the runners when needed and hang out near the finish line to support the first and second time marathoners as they conclude their marathon.

I also went on to visit Nuvali last year to cheer the marathoners.  In photo with Jaymie Pizarro, the Bull Runner and founder of The Bull Runner Dream Marathon.

Race Route and Elevation

Race Map Powered By Suunto Ambit 3 Sport

Elevation Profile Powered by Suunto Ambit 3 Sport

The Race starts at E Nature Avenue and takes a 1.5 kilometers inner loop heading to Nuvali Boulevard.  The race descends to Nuvali Boulevard and have a short but steep climb in the Rotonda heading to the other side of Nuvali Boulevard for the next two kilometers.  Up next is a long 4.5 kilometer climb covering about 50 meters of elevation towards the end of Nuvali Boulevard.  The roads shifts to a descent of about 30 meters at Diversity Avenue for the next kilometer before shifting to another steep climb at Venare for the next 1.5 kilometers covering 50 meters of elevation.  The race descends back from Venare to the end of Diversity Avenue over the next 2 kilometers with a drop of 60 meters.  After the u-turn slot, the route climbs back again to Nuvali Boulevard over the next 1.5 kilometers worth 50 meters of elevation gain. The race shifts back to descents along Nuvali Boulevard over the next 3.5 kilometers worth 60 meters of elevation.  The race then goes up to the Rotonda and goes back to E Nature Avenue over the next 2 kilometers before finishing off with the inner loop to E Nature Avenue going to the finish line.

The Race

With Team Smart Icar and Ian, Monching of Raceday and the Running Host Boy Ramos

I went throwback for this one as I wore the exact customized singlet I used on my marathon 2 years ago. As it would turn out, it would also throwback to the same situation of racing with no sleep just like when I did my first marathon.  It’s possible to run a marathon with no sleep but make sure that you had a lot of sleep during the rest of the week.  I did have a lot of sleep reserved for the half marathon.  Anyway, the goal is just to enjoy the distance and support the marathoners.

With Team Smart Team Manager Ian and eventual female champion Icar (Spoiler Alert)

The race started at exactly 5 pm and I went on for a sustainable pace as we went through the inner roads and headed to Nuvali Boulevard.  I wanted to ensure that I had enough time to warm up my legs before shifting to a run walk set and also took advantage of the descent heading to the guardhouse.  I maintained the pace and went on to run a portion of the climb in the rotonda before slowing down to preserve energy on the descents.  I went back on the running pace at the top of the Rotonda heading to the other side of Nuvali Boulevard for the first 4 kilometers of the race.

After the guardhouse, we entered the false flat portion of Nuvali Boulevard. I noticed my cadence was going down.  It was still too early to slow down so I started to pick up the pace on the out and back loop going to Xavier Univerity for the next 1.5 kilometer of the race.  The race was now shifting to the climbs and I didn’t want to go lazy on the climbs since it can really make you stronger so I went on to run about 1-2 minutes of climbs before having 20 seconds of walking breaks.  I was able to sustain that up until the 8th kilometer or the end of the climb.  I took advantage of the descent at Diversity Avenue for the next kilometer before we were asked to turn to Venare.

Since I’m familiar with the area, I knew that the turn to Venare was a long and steep climb.  I took it as a challenge to attack the hills one interval at a time so I’d go again at one to two minutes run and have 20 seconds of rest and repeat until I finally reached the u-turn slot at kilometer 10.5.  The road back was easier so I cruised on the descent at a relaxed pace as I wanted to preserve my energy on the climb.  The descent continued to the end of Diversity Avenue and after the u-turn, I knew it was time to make my move.  It was another 1.5 kilometer of run and I still wanted to push the pace so went back to the run walk routine to cover the climb faster without draining my energy reserves.

Enjoying the Hills. Photo by Jose Ramizares of RUnning Photographers.

Once I’ve stepped back at Nuvali Boulevard, I knew the hard part of the race was over. I took the chance to cruise on the descents. I took my time on the aid station to eat the various treats prepared by dream chasers. It was also time to say my Hi’s and hello’s to friends who were in the chasers tent.  I took the descent back to Rotonda at a relaxed pace especially since gravity was on my side this time.  On the way back to the other side of Nuvali, it was also time when the heat of the sun came into play. I just made sure I’m properly hydrated and went on to endure the heat.  I headed to the last 1.5 kilometer stretch took it easy, chatted a while at the chasers tent and went on to finish and surprisingly at a decent pace.

Time to support the dreamers.

The half marathon was not my main focus for this one as I would want to give back and cheer the runners as they went on to finish their marathon. I immediately changed after my race and went on to the last 200 meters heading to the finish line.  I was there for several hours congratulating runners and cheering on them for one last push.  You would just be amazed how the faces of the runners would radiate once they get to hear that they are so close to the finish line and being a marathoners.  There’s hundred of feel-goof stories happening that morning from the runner who was cramping in the last 2 kilometers but remained strong-willed to finish the race.  There were runners who suffered the rest of the race and dug deep to finish.  There were runners of all ages, sizes and fitness level who found the strength of will and character to finally be christened a marathoner.  There’s nothing like your first and there’s no marathon as heartwarming and inspiring as The Bull Runner Dream Marathon.

When you believe in a brand, it’s second nature to patronize it. I took it one step further by making Oakley eyewear as my first venture for my Company, Francramon Enterprises Inc.  The love and appreciation of the Oakley brand has grown through the years.  At first, I was there for just for the look of the eyewear. Oakley got the most fashionable designs.  Then I got to feel the comfort of their eye wear as I went on longer runs and bike rides with their lightweight features.  Later on, I got to appreciate the technology.  Their high definition optics gave me a clearer, sharper view without distortion.  They also have unrivaled impact protection that means a lot to me as I tend to be clumsy at times in the trails where my Oakley gets hit by tree trunk and other foreign objects.  There’s the 100% UV protection that gives a mental edge when the heat is on plus protection for the eyes.

Crossing my first 42.195 kilometers with Oakley

I’ve conquered a lot of running mileage with my Oakleys.  I’m glad that Oakley can protect me from the sun’s ray and let me focus on my run.  When I crossed my first Marathon finish line in 2014, Oakley helped a lot especially on the latter part with the sun getting extra glaring in the early morning.  It gets a lot tougher especially that the open roads are not shaded and the glare can really be distracting.   With Oakley, my eyes felt relaxed as I didn’t have to worry about the glare of the sun. That alone was a great mental edge as I took on the tougher parts of the marathon.  Whether it’s a marathon or a just an easy-paced fun run, Oakley gives me unrivaled UV protection.

Doing Duathlons with Oakley

My worry on bike rides is the debris that can hit my eyes especially since I’m always wearing contact lens.  I also worry about fogging especially when sweat starts to add moisture to most sunglasses.  I didn’t have to worry about that with Oakley as it kept me protected from the debris.  It also have tiny vents on the top part of the eye wear to reduce moisture that can lead to fogging.  Then there’s the high definition optics that gives me a clearer view of the road ahead.

Traveling with Oakleys

I also do my fair share of traveling. When you go places, expect to take the heat whether it’s lounging around the beach or taking a stroll around foreign roads.   You really spend a lot of time outdoors when you travel as you switch from one tourist attraction to another.  I also have several Oakley Lifestyle eye wears that gives me a more casual and laid back look.  It keeps me protected from the sun and I get to go around in style.

Oakleys in the Mountains

I’ve also grown fond of doing trails and climbing mountains.  Compared to running, where it’s mostly in the morning and evening, trails and trek is an all day activities.  Sun protection is key and the high definition optics of Oakley makes a whole world of difference. Imagine seeing a ridge or summit view of the mountains and you’re using really dark glasses.  It takes away some of the beauty of the place.  Oakley High Definition optics gives a clearer and sharper view of the surroundings.

Oakleys for Everyday

I also wear glasses especially on work day.  I actually got a sporty Ferrari Crosslink Oakley and plan to pair it up with some transition lenses.  So I can have a regular prescription glasses to work and yet still have a sporty eyewear that can double as sun glasses when I’m outdoors.  Oakley can really be flexible from sports, prescription and lifestyle. They have different eye wear to suit your needs.

Oakley is now available at Maximus Athlete’s Shop Cafe located at the Sparta Complex, 126 Pioneer Street Mandaluyong City.  You get a free Metal Gascan Cap with every purchase of Oakley Eyewear at Maximus Athlete’s Shop and Cafe.  You can also check out bikes, shoes, accessories, Go Pro, and race nutrition items when you visit the shop.  Of course, don’t forget to try out their specialty coffee, which you would surely give you an enriching coffee experience.

You can check the available stock at Francramon.com Facebook Page.
