Milestone pod can be synced to your phone to give you all the metrics on your run.

Milestone Sports Philippines officially launches the much awaited MilestonePod; an affordable waterproof foot pod with extensive battery life that improves your performance and keeps you running healthy. In a day and age where one has to pay a premium to own a decent performance tracker, the MilestonePod is certainly a breath of fresh air.  It’s more affordable than a running watch, priced at P1,695.  The Milestone Pod can work with bluetooth GPS watches or work on its own and it measures practically everything.

Tested it on a trail run in Bacolod and yes, it’s waterproof.

The MilestonePod measures foot strike, rate of impact, ground contact, leg swing and stride length which transcends what most GPS watches can cover. The MilestonePod is also as user-friendly as it is pocket-friendly. Not only does it record more than 10 different metrics, but it simplifies and summarizes all the data for you as well. Think of it as taking all the raw data recorded on standard running watches and being able to read it in the form of a children’s book. Simple, straightforward and animated!

Measures practically everything.

Measures practically everything.

“These little bits of information are what will bring every runner’s game up a notch. Given the many advancements in footwear, there’s still so much about ourselves that shoes alone cannot provide.” said Hitler Dulay of Milestone Sports Philippines at the Pod Powered event at Maximus Athlete’s Shop Café. “Clipping the pod onto any shoe instantly awards the shoe with a brain of its own.” he added.

Going Beyond Pace

So how does the pod fare with the experts? The MilestonePod is actually backed up by highly acclaimed athletes in different sports.

  • Coach and Triathlete Don Velasco, has included the pod with his many tools in his famous run lab – of which has produced many podium finishers in recent local races.
  • Milestone Sports Ultrarunner Rose Betonio is also an avid user of the pod. She was amazed by the accuracy and quality of information the pod was able to give as she finished 2nd female overall at the Monster Ultra 200 in Singapore last May 1, 2017.

The MilestonePod is also amazingly well-matched with different platforms already being used by runners. It’s compatible with select Polar, Suunto and Garmin units. Furthermore, the pod is usable through popular and interactive running apps like Zwift and Strava. Many upgrades like these are said to be on its way making things more exciting for the growing number of ‘Pod Heads’ around the world.

This little running buddy is a must-have in every runner’s arsenal. It can guide a beginner to start running with proper form, or help a seasoned runner breakthrough from a plateau. If you’re looking for a low-cost, informative and durable performance tracker, this pod is the perfect fit for you. With the MilestonePod, less is definitely more.

MilestonePod and Me

Milestone Pod and my On Cloud Flow

Milestone Pod and my On Cloud Flow

I’ve been using the Milestone Pod since January this year.  I’ve paired it with my Brooks Mazama on trails and On Cloud Flow on the Road.  The first test was on the trails. While trails can be an anything goes adventure, it’s also nice your metrics on the climbs, on flat grounds and on descent.  Trails may not be rhythmic as road runs but seeing the metrics can really help you improve on the aspects of your run.  You can now be more conscious on how cadence, stride length, foot strikes is on different surfaces and let’s you know what aspects to work on.

MilestonePod gives you a better appreciation of your shoes.

MilestonePod gives you a better appreciation of your shoes.

I got a better appreciation of MilestonePod when I paired it with my On Cloud Flow.  Road running is more of a rhythmic activity so you get a better idea on the cadence, stride length, leg swings and a lot more.  I like that it also measures the life of your shoes.  Having the MilestonePod reminded me of those days when I was chasing my first sub1 10K.  We used to do drills to improve our cadence, stride length and leg swing.  With each drill and consistent training, I got improvements in my pace until I eventually hit my goal.

Set your goal and hit your mark.

Set your goal and hit your mark.

Milestone Pod has an insight function that lets you focus on a goal and the Pod helps you monitor it.  When chasing a sub 1 10K or setting a new PR, these metrics do matter.  Sometimes just being a bit conscious on your stride, proper impact and cadence can really speed up your run.  There are also several ways to improve your cadence like doing speed sets, cross training on bike and a lot more.

MilestonePod also helps you avoid injury.  Rate of impact is a sign that your are landing too hard and might be more conscious on your landings or maybe even to change to a more cushioned shoes.  I’m having a higher rate of impact now since I don’t run as frequently as I used to. In other words, I’m back to my old habits.  The longer you run, the more you get muscle memory and the better you run.  I need to wok on that.

I also have a more conservative approach when I run so I am having a lower leg swing.  Higher leg swing generates more power and longer stride lengths, which can save you more energy and run more efficiently.  We used to do butt kicks and high knees to improve on the stride length and the leg swings.  The key is to be more consistent on the drills, monitor it with the pod and in no time, you are running more efficiently.

There are also graphs for each metric to help you observe your run patters.  I tend to do a more efficient run walk set so you can easily see the cadence fluctuate between run and walk sets.  There are so many reasons to love the MilestonePod and you can actually do away with the watches and run by feel and it measures the following:

  • Pace
  • Distance
  • Duration
  • Foot strike
  • Rate of impact
  • Leg swing
  • Ground contact
  • Cadence
  • Stride Length
  • Runficiency Score
  • Shoe Odometer

It measures your laps and gives you an insight on how you perform over time.  The key is to have an even effort or even go for those negative splits.  MilestonePod gives you a better appreciation on your runs and would really be a good investment especially when you are starting your running careers or even just chasing new goals.  Numbers matter and it’s by measuring your performance that you learn how to progress. On Running Brings Versatility Into Their Shoes

It’s been more than a quarter now after shifting back to ON Running Shoes for my road runs.  They have more variety and versatility now that gives you the feel of running on clouds in their shoes.  #OnRunning #PHGameOn

On Running Shoes

Cloud Flash Launch

Cloudflash Launch

Each shoe brand has its own technology.  In terms of function they can be similar but each one comes with a different approach.  On Running Shoes uses a CloudTec® technology which uses cloud pods to cushion each foot strike and propels you off the next stride.   That added cushion can reduce impact on your knees and feet, which when accumulated can mean a lot of wear and tear.    That’s the key technology that powers On Running Shoes.  They recently launched their fastest shoes on the line, which is the Cloudflash.  It’s their own version of the racing flat, which is aimed to gain as much speed on the road and on the track.

It’s built to make the most of each second on the run.  Flashy can be one word to describe the Cloudflash. White is the new flashy and it will definitely make you stand out on the race course with its white and neon color way.  To save weight, they took out the midsole and replaced it with a more efficient speed board. The speed board is made from Pebax, which is designed to return energy from the landing to the take off.  It’s also designed of lightweight nano-mesh material, which does not absorb water, keeping it light even as you sweat.   Weighing at just 6.2 ounces, it’s a shoe designed for the personal-record chasing athlete.

On Running Brings in the Versatility Into Their Shoes

So far, I’ve tried 3 types of On Running Shoes now. The Cloud, which I got last January. The Cloud Surfer, which I got to try out during the launch and the Cloud Flow, which I got last March.

Cloud

The Cloud

The Cloud

The Cloud is your everyday running and lifestyle shoes.  It’s a minimalist shoes with a maximal cushioning care of the CloudTec® pods.  I’ve had the Cloud since January and was able to run with it up until a half marathon.  It’s more of an active lifestyle shoes, which you can use day to day but serviceable to get on you on the short runs.  I like that the lacing system can be converted to a slip on shoes.  I enjoyed that it has a lightweight feel at 7 oz, which can help you breeze the shorter run.  If you can harness it for the long-runs, then it’s good to go. If you tend to heel-strike like I do, go for the more cushioned On models like the Cloud Flow or the Cloud Surfer.  What I’ve been loving about the cloud is it’s casual look.  It actually looks like a topsider and is really comfortable as a day to day shoes.

Cloud Surfer

Cloud Surfer

Cloud Surfer

When it comes to cushioning, Cloud Surfer is probably the most cushioned among the On Running line.  Of course, with more cushioning comes a little more weight. The Cloud Surfer weighs in at 9.7 oz.  Despite having a maximalist feel, the Cloud surfer is remains reactive on the road.  I was able to try this out on a speed session at ultra. The end result was zero pain on the legs and knee. It felt like floating with that cushy CloudTec® feel.  You’ll barely feel the weight as the cloud pods gives you a lift on the take off.   You can also go with the Cloud Surfer for training runs to add power to the legs while training with a heavier shoes and race with a lighter On model.  Cloud surfer can be a perfect go to shoes if you prefer some added protection and cushioning.

Cloud Flow

Cloud Flow

Cloud Flow

The Cloud Flow is my favorite in the current line of On Running Shoes.  It’s 7.8 oz, which is mid-range between  the Cloud and the Cloud Surfer.  It has a more cushioning and gives you a better and more responsive feel of the road.  I’ve been doing my training runs with the Cloud Flow and it really brings back the fun into running.  I was surprised to be able to run at a faster pace the first time I used it and barely noticed that I already did more than 10 kilometers with less wear and tear on the road. Each run felt light and efficient with the CloudTec®.  It’s the perfect balance of lightweight feel and cushioning.  It’s a great race shoes that is efficient and can really reduce wear and tear with a running on clouds feel.

Running on Clouds

Picking a shoes is not a walk in a park.  If you find a shoe that works for you, invest on the shoe, harness it and just run.  I’m glad to be running on clouds again.   The soft cushy feel of each step with On is just what I needed to pile in more road mileages on training and on the races. See you on the road.

Time to Fly with Hoka One One

Blazing the trail with Hoka One One – Photo by Eric Tipon for Active Pinas

Hoka One One has brought in the added support for the long run yet retains the lightweight feel on the shoes.  I’ve been using Speed Instinct and Speed Goat on the trails and I’m enjoying the added comfort, support yet still retain the lightweight feel with Hoka One One.

Read About:

Hoka One One Speed Instinct

I’ve joined the Hoka One One craze a month before it landed in Manila.  I was able to get Speed Instinct at a discount in Singapore.  Toe area is a bit shallow so I got a half size bigger than my usual shoe size and it was now a perfect fit.  I immediately noticed the cushioned feel of Speed Instinct and surprisingly, it;s lightweight at 8.40 oz.  That’s almost an equivalent of a lightweight road shoes.  The lugs are not too aggressive and it almost feels like a road shoes.  In fact the first time I used the Speed Instinct was on the road.

8K on the Road

8K+ on the Road

I almost forgot that it was a trail shoes as I was posting road pace covering more than 8 kilometers in an hour.  It’s responsive on the road, which makes it an excellent weapon for road to trail races.

I got to test out the Speed Instinct on several trail races.  First taste of the trail was a 16 Kilometer race at Mount Sinai in Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo Rizal.  The trails along Mount Sinai were mostly muddy dirt roads and the traction was good.  Despite not being too aggressive on the lugs, the shoe had multi-directional lugs to keep you firmly planted on the trail. It also felt so fun blitzing the downhill trails of Casile with a mix or dirt roads and stone paths.  The cushion reduced the impact of the stride giving me more courage and less stress on the descent.  I barely noticed the technical part heading to the river since I felt that the traction was fine.  We ended up on the road and it’s the Speed Instinct’s time to fly.

Up next was a 10K rolling trails at North Luzon Renewables in Ilocos where we were invited to test out their route.  In terms of trails it was a mix of rough roads and it wasn’t technical at all.  The unique part of the course aside from the wonderful windmills surrounding you, was that it had long stretches of climbs and descents.  One thing I noticed on climbs is that you tend to have more time on ground as you slow down with gravity.  That’s were a comfortable shoes like Speed Instinct comes into play.  Despite walking or slowing down some stretches, it still soft on the bottom of the foot.  I did have fun bombing the descents as I felt that it had enough support to protect my knees as I took advantage of gravity.

I was also able to use it for my race in Mount Batolusong.  It was a slow trail for me as half the race was spent on the uphill and on technical trails heading to Mount Batolusong.  The traction was ok but it’s not much of an advantage on the slippery part.  I can do well with the Speed Instinct but when I got to the more technical part, I had to slow down a bit because it has less aggressive lugs.  The steep descent, which was wet at that time, felt like a chore but as I went to more solid ground, it felt like time to fly again.

In a nutshell, I’d go with the Speed Instinct on road to trail runs and it’s a big advantage.  For mountain runs with extremely technical trails, I’d go with a shoe with more aggressive lugs for stronger traction.  Trail Running is like a game of strategies, you have to familiarize yourself with the terrain and surfaces and pick the one the would give you the best advantage.

Hoka One One Speed Goat

Hoka One One Speed Goat

Hoka One One Speed Goat

I got the Hoka One One Speed Goat from Runer and what can I say, it has big lugs.  It has more stability and balanced cushioning.  It’s also heavier at 9.7 ounces though it’s still feels light on the feet.  Let’s just say, it’s the bigger brother of Speed Instinct.  When the trails get tough, the Speed Goat may be one for you.  There are really some trade off, you get more weight, you get more cushioning and support.  It’s just a matter of choosing, which shoes would be perfect for which trail.  Definitely, the Speed Instinct is the faster shoes but when the going gets tough, you’ll love to hang on to the added cushion support and traction of the Speed Goat.

Speed Goat at Yellow Trails

Speed Goat at Yellow Trails

I got to try the Speed Goat at Camp John Hay Yellow Trails.  The Yellow Trail are mainly dirt tracks but the inclines can be a challenge.  It really feels soft on the feet whether you are walking or running in the trail.  Even when you’re standing on slanted trails it feels that you are firmly planted because of the aggressive lugs and traction.  I got to feel that traction and support even on slippery roads.  When the trails go down, you can go fearless because of the sufficient support and the traction.

Mount Yangbew

Mount Yangbew

I also did a run at Mount Yangbew and that’s where I noticed the superior traction of the Speed Goat.  The climb was short but it was on more technical mountain trails.  It felt at ease moving around the mountain with the Speed Goat.  I even climb one of the small rock formation for a photo-op and the shoe traction really helped.  On the descent, it was excellent in blitzing the trail as you just worry about your run and not slipping on the technical trails.

The biggest test for my Speed Goat was our 15 Kilometer recon at Tanay. While most of the trails were single track dirt roads which was easy to navigate, we had a stretch of 4 kilometers worth of river trek, crossings and even some bouldering.  The drains of the Speed Goat is quite efficient and I barely noticed the inflow and outflow of water over numerous river crossing.  Passing over some boulders and rock formation was a challenge as you had to be creative on your steps but the superior traction of the Speed Goat helped a lot on this stretch.  The difficult part felt endless but I felt secure with my shoes.  I even had to do the 4 kilometer ascent on muddy trails made slippery by the rain and slipping was the least of my worry.

I felt secure with the cushion, support and the aggressive lugs of the Speed Goat on technical surfaces.  For faster trails, I’d go with the Speed Instinct but for longer mountain trails, I’d go for the Speed Goat.  Either shoes would be excellent on the trails but each would have its advantages and disadvantages.  It really helps to understand the course. Hoka One One provides enough cushion, support and lightweight feel to make trail run a lot more fun.

DBB Mountain Rockstar 2017

Finished!

Finished!

Running DBB Rockstar event is never an easy task at whatever distance.  The trails were both technical and slippery and the ascents were really steep and endless.  The scorching summer sun also came to play at the latter part of the race. At the end of the day, that’s what Rockstars are made of.  Rock stars takes all the adversity and just shine.

DBB Mountain Rockstar

There’s the story that happens between the starting line and finish line.  It’s the starts that give us a pat in the back that says, “good job for being here”.  It’s the end that gives you satisfaction and validation but it’s the journey that happens in between that brings you lasting moments and memories you’d store in your gritty database.  It’s what keeps me coming back for more. There are days I breeze to a race and there are days that I struggle.  DBB Mountain Rockstar was a race that I struggled and I loved every moment of that struggle.  It’s a different story every time.  12 kilometer run with Mount Batolusong’s elevation and technical trails providing the challenge.

Race Route and Elevation

The race route was simple with a slightly rolling terrain on the first kilometer before it shifts to an all out assault to the summit and then the race descends back to the finish line.

When I arrived at the venue it was raining hard at around the start of the 25 Kilometer gun start.  While rains are tolerable on trail races, they do change the dynamic of the trails by making it slippery.  By the time, it was our gun start, the rain has already stopped.  We had our gun start at exactly 6 am and for one, I didn’t have a game plan.  The drill was climb half the race with more 600 meters elevation gain and then descend the second half.  The 12 kilometer had a different route since we’ll be taking an out and back on the traditional trails while the longer distance had a longer ascent though on wider trails.

The first kilometer were on rough roads with a rolling terrain.  I took this chance to start fast as it would probably the only time I would be running given the long ascent.  Midway the first kilometer, the trails shifted to single track dirt roads and some with paved stairways.  The ascent was steep so it was a struggle as we had to go on slippery and wet dirt grounds.  I brought out my pole and then went at a slow pace.  Funny how I followed the pace of people in front me only to find out that they were trekkers and not part of the race.  I felt real slow on the climb.  Since the miles were trickling so slow, I shifted my watch to just focus on the altitude.   I had to cover around 600 meters of elevation.

The early morning sea of clouds.

The early morning sea of clouds.

It was an almost direct assault with no rolling stretches to recover so I’d take a few hundred meters and rest for a few seconds and go again.  The first part of the climb reminds me of the tough technical surface of Mount Makiling and it’s mostly forested trails.  Aside from the poles, I would try to hang on the rocks and twigs for leverage on the climb.  Difficult as it is, I have grown to appreciate technical trails because it keeps your mind thinking on what’s your next step.  It keeps you occupied from all the huff and puff moments of the climb.  There were also a lot of views to keep you visually enticed on the climb.  There was the early morning sea of clouds and then there were the mountain ranges surrounding Mount Batalusong.

As we went out of the forested trail, we had a better view of the mountains though at this time, were partly covered by the clouds. I hit the aid station later, where there was a short rolling stretch and ridge where you can actually run before resuming the arduous journey to the summit.  After recovering a bit on the ridge part, it was time to climb again. It was another set of assaults to the summit.  The trails were still technical and we were enveloped by clouds so it’s mostly white background at this point.  It was one effort after another until I hit a spot where a lot of people are taking pictures.  I hope that’s the summit.  Well, its not.  It’s a bit foggy but you can see the mountains and the trails from this vantage point.

ID picture with white background.

ID picture with white background.

We were still about a kilometer away from the summit so I went ahead on another set of climbs.  It was a slightly forested trails with some bamboo shafts.  I just did the drill of just climbing until I hit the stretch approaching the summit.  We saw someone climbing on the rock and thought if we had to do it too.  The marshal told us to take the route on the right.  It was a really slippery trail and it felt dangerous.  I almost slip on one rock but it was a good thing I was able to get my balance or it could have been a long ravine to fall from.  It makes me think that I should have just taken the rock climbing options.  It became tougher since it was also the descending trail from the summit so there were part where we have to squeeze ourselves on the single track trails.  Back to the basics on trails like this is to keep your center balance to the wall and hang on to rocks, twigs or anything you can hang on to.  It was a difficult stretch on one hand you had to deal with the climb and at the same time you had to manage your balance.  All is worth it as I finally have my ID picture with white background at the summit.

All that effort for this photo with white background.

After hitting the summit, I told the marshal that this was the hardest ID picture with white background photo ever.   It was satisfying though after the seemingly endless climb, the numerous slips and the struggle.  It was time to descend the trails.  The descent was even more difficult than the climb as it was really slippery.  I used my pole to add more balance and was bouncing around from one tree trunk, stone, bamboo shafts just to ensure I won’t slip on my way down.  It was a slow descent especially on the slippery parts.  I saw some 12K and 25K runners on their way up and I can feel the difficulty in them too.  I was able to exit the technical part of the trail and was on drier grounds.

I took the chance to run on drier trails and hello Mr. Sun.  The sun was scorching hot already at this time so it was draining every time I run.  I just went on to run, walk, recover until I hit the aid station, which meant I was just 3 kilometers to the end of the race.  I was also back to the technical parts of the trails. I tried to skip on the steps just to speed up a bit until I hit the forested trails.  Since the trails were covered, it also meant that the trails were still wet from this morning’s rain.  I went slow at this part and even slipped several times on this stretch.  I had to stop and gather my composure and recover my confidence on the descent.  I went slow until I was comfortable again. When I hit the bottom of the descent, there was a store. I had a soft drinks break, which was my treat for enduring that scary descent.

Finishing up - Photo by Eva Marie Soquena of Active Pinas

Finishing up – Photo by Eva Marie Soquena of Active Pinas

It was now routine at this point.  I brisked walk on this stretched and went on to run the final stretches to finish within 3 hours.  I was slow for this one but I did enjoy the experience.  If it’s easy that it won’t be meant for rock stars like you and me.  I’m also glad to see friends before, after and during the race.  What happens between the starting line and the finish line is always an epic adventure for the books.

Be On The Go with E-Hydrate

E-hydrate is an all natural Protein on the Go hydration pack that can complement your active lifestyle and aid in muscle recovery and joints health.  #HealthyOptionsPh #KnowtheWholeStory

E-hydrate

I got to try out e-hydrate from Healthy Options to check if it can complement with my healthy and fit lifestyle.  Running has been a part of my system for the past seven years.  I still get to learn a thing or two about nutrition as of now and it’s good to explore a product like e-hydrate. Nutrition is something I have yet to master but it’s always best to get to try it out and see how your system reacts.   The first plus about e-hydrate is that it’s all natural.  It’s generally safer for the system.  Among the key products I tried would be their Premium Whey Blend + Electrolytes that comes in vanilla and chocolate flavor and Premium Whey Blend + Joint Health.  The e-hydrate with electrolytes would be an excellent nutrition sources when working out and the e-hydrate for joint health would be an excellent boost to the muscles and joints to strengthen it and help it recover from the strains of training.

E-Hydrate (Premium Whey Blend + Electrolytes)

I got to try out e-hydrate with electrolytes as my run hydration partner.  Protein is important in our system as it helps improve our metabolism as well as help in muscle generation while electrolytes helps our system in terms of water retention.   It’s really important to have a system of replenishing nutrients in our system as we sweat it out during our runs.  That’s were a hydration plan comes into place.  First thing I like about e-hydrate that I like is that it’s easy to grip on the run.  It can go in place of your water bottle. Just add water and you’re ready to go.

I’m good to go with just one e-hydrate right in the palm of my hand.  I had the vanilla flavor for this run.  It’s just light on the hand so it won’t feel like a chore when you run and you can alternate between hands too.  I would usually take a sip every 500 meters to 1 kilometer.  The key is never deprive your body of hydration to the point you are gasping for water already.  The taste of sweetened vanilla with cold water is such a thirst quencher.   It’s just the right amount of sweetness to jump start my system on the next stretch of the run. Overall, I did 45 minutes run around the park.  I consumed about 75% of the pack and finished the whole pouch after the run.  I didn’t feel lacking in energy and water in my system even on a hot and humid night.  It did give me a nice boost on the run and would be perfect too for longer runs, which require more electrolyte replenishment.  I do hope that they can make a fruity variant for variety as I also would want to mix the flavors when I run.  The e-hydrate can be an excellent work out hydration partner on your runs or when you work out.

E-Hydrate Active (Premium Whey + Joint Health)

E-Hydrate is not just your workout partner.  It can be just there to support you on the rigors of your daily life.   The main difference of this variant is it’s focused on giving you a healthy joints.  I tried it on a busy day at work.  Even or regular days, I don’t slouch around.  I take the stairs. I walk several blocks to get to my parking.  I usually do errands.  Keeping active, requires energy.  I tried E-Hydrate Active, which have a Milk Chocolate flavor.  I can say I am more active and more mobile with it. The milk chocolate flavor gives my my sugar dose without feeling like an indulgence since it comes from natural sweeteners.    I don’t feel sluggish and I am energized to last the rigors and stresses of the days.  It helped me recover faster and I was able to run on back to back days.   In between working out is recovery and that includes keeping those joints healthy and mobile on regular days.   The faster you recover, the more frequent you can train and the stronger you get.  It can be your go-to day to day drink to complement balancing work, life and training.  It’s an energy and protein source to keep you going to healthy enough to get the job done.

E-Hydrate

In a nutshell, E-hydrate can help power your day and your workout with ingredients that comes from natural sources.  It can go as your go-to energy drink for that regular electrolyte replenishment when you run or work out or that added dose of nutrients to keep the bones and joints healthy to reduce the wear and tear of having an active lifestyle.  The vanilla and chocolate flavors are not usual for energy drinks but it’s a good option as those can be still be excellent source of sugar and energy to power your work out.  It’s excellent to use on regular days or when you travel as it’s handy and easily dissolves in water.  E-Hydrate is available at Healthy Options.

Let the Kids Play at Nuun Dirt Pre-school

Coach Ige leads the kids in Nuun Dirt Pre-school

Coach Ige leads the kids in Nuun Dirt Pre-school

Kids belong outdoors and for one weekend, they got to enjoy the outdoors and the trails via Nuun Dirt Preschool.  Camp N of Nuvali played host for a little dose of sunshine and a lot of dirt as they got to learn the basics of trail running and the importance of the environment last April 1, 2017.

Read About:

Nuun Dirt School

Being a dirt schooler myself, I can say I really learned a lot from Nuun Dirt School with the several sessions I’ve joined.  Trail running is a skill we get to master with practice and of course, from interactions with people who’ve spent a lot of trail time like Coach Ige Lopez.  He’s a mountaineer and a triathlete and definitely can walk his talk when it comes to trail running.  For a change, I went to cover a really special session of Nuun Dirt School, which was their pre-school.  I found it the perfect way to de-stress from a the hectic work schedule I had lately.  The trails is indeed for everybody, Kids included.  It would be fun to see kids at play and enjoying the outdoors.

Pre School

Camp N was the perfect venue for the kids as Nuvali has a mini trail that safe for kids and also had fun, games and obstacles to keep those energetic kids occupied.  Handling 26 dirt pre-schoolers was a real challenge for Coach Ige but he was able to adjust his approach for the kids.  It started in a non-competitive (make that competitive as kids would always be competitive in any game) obstacle race which had the kids going over tile obstacles, climbing, crawling and running.

The kids were separated into four groups and they took part in the obstacle 2 groups at a time.  Those kids are just bolts of energy as they’ve blitz the whole obstacle course in minutes.  You can really see that the kids were having fun along the course and Coach Ige were timing each participants (Like I said, it was non-competitive).

The energy and the laughter of the kids were really infectious.  This is how kids should enjoy their childhood, outdoors and having fun.  It was also fun to see the kids at play.  It may look chaotic at times but watching them was such a pleasure.  After the obstacle course, they took a hydration break to try out Nuun Hydration. Yes, Nuun is perfectly safe for kids and let me quote the kids, it taste like ice cold lemonade.  That had them refreshed, recharged and ready to go again.

Time to Hit The Trails

When kids run, they run real fast.

When kids run, they run real fast.

Up next was an actual trail run.  Camp N has a trail that run for 1.3 kilometers and it was divided into shorter segments so the kids can do a manageable relay race.  When kids run, they really run fast and that’s natural of them.  Coach Ige led the first group of kids who went to run the course.  Even if this was a short trail, Camp N was able to show different trail views and surfaces. There were open trails and there were also forested trails.

Let’s just say the kids gave their parents a hard time chasing them along the trail.  They were definitely having the time of their lives running the trails.  Let the kids experience a bit of dirt. They may have some bruises and scratches but it will give them appreciate the outdoors better.

They had a blast at the trail and they even have their own finish line after the race.  There should really be more trail runs for kids just to get them to have the hang of the outdoors.

Trail for Singles Only? I find this trail sign really funny.

After the trail run, Coach Ige shared some pointers on the importance of the environment to the kids.  They also got to get their lootbags for the event.  The kids then went on to enjoy the facilities of Camp N.

Kids at Play

After the session, the kids were allowed to play and it turns out that the camp was just a warm up for them.  They went through a maze, explored the place but they spent most of the time having fun in a wooden lever you had to balance by distributing the weight of the participants evenly.

It was really fun seeing the kids play here.  The bigger kids would try to find a way to balance the wooden lever but the younger kids would just run around it since it was more fun being bounced around from one side to another.  Kids would always be kids and let them be.

Let the Kids at Heart Play Too

I ended up trying the roller coaster zip line with the people from Nuun and it was a crazy ride.  The longer one had us screaming our way while being thrown up, down, left and right along the path of the zip line.  The short one was shorter but equally scary since we’d be bouncing around over 3 major looping drops.  Jecky and Claire also tried the rappel and the wall climb.

So cool how my On Running shoes matches my outfit and the Camp N helmet.

So cool how my On Running shoes matches my outfit and the Camp N helmet.

I guess the kids at heart had their share of fun as well.  When I was in Camp N a year ago and we had the first shot at the place before it was open to the public, I didn’t try this one. This time, before I even thought about trying it, the safety gear was already on.  I had no choice but to try it and I’m just glad I did.

” Life is a roller coaster ride.  It may take us up, down and even at times spiraling out of control but if you let the thrill play it’s role, you’ll end up enjoying the ride.”

Start Your Wednesday Brooks Run Happy Habit

Wednesday is Run Happy Day as Brooks in cooperation with 2xU, Pace Prehab and Recovery, Planet Sports and Kerry Sports Manila, brings you the Run Happy Crew.  It’s a series of lecture and run sessions that focuses on individual aspects of the run.  Run Happy Crew is held every Wednesday from March 29 – May 3, 2017, 7 pm at Kerry Sports Manila.

Run Happy Crew

Brooks has been bringing the Run Happy feel with their shoes, which is made for runners by the runners themselves.  They bring Run Happy in a totally different way via their Run Happy Crew, which is a series of Running sessions focusing on individual aspects of the run.   The run is free and you just have to pre-register as follows:

  • Visit Kerry Sports Manila in BGC or 2xU Performance Center in Glorietta
  • Sign up the Registration form provided at the cashier
  • Those who sign up in-store automatically gets a 10% discount coupon to 2xU and P500 off on Brooks.
  • Confirmation message will be sent via email within 24 hours upon registration
  • Present any valid proof of registration to the run coaches on event day and go run happy.

The sessions started on March 29, 2017 with a talk on breathing as well as a 5 kilometer run around BGC.  There will be new focus topics on the succeeding sessions, which falls on Wednesday, 7 pm at Kerry Sports Manila.

The first session handled by Coach Francis Diano was all about breathing. Breathing is really important when you run as it helps regulate your system.  You can have side stitch, stiffness on the shoulder and lack of breathe when you don’t use the proper technique which is breathing from your diaphragm.  I’m a chest breather most of the time so I try to be more conscious with proper breathing on the run.  It can really help you sustain your surges on the run as well as prolong your endurance. The participants got to try out the tips on an actual run around BGC.

Run Happy Indeed.

Run Happy Indeed.

Well, this is just the start of the weekly Run Happy Crew sessions. Make it a Wednesday Habit.  Take note on the individual topics and then get to combined all the skill set on the May 3 session.  You’re definitely gonna be a better runner in 6 weeks and more importantly, you’re gonna Run Happy.

Running with the Windmills at Ilocos Norte

Run with the Windmills

Run with the Windmills

Ilocos Norte has always been a part of my bucket list. Thanks to North Luzon Renewables, I’m happy to tick that off as well as be able to have an intimate runs around their windmills at Pagudpod, Ilocos Norte.  It was a great eat and run weekend that had us awed by the beauty of Ilocos Norte.

Ilocos Norte

Ilocos Norte has been illusive for me even if I spent most of my lifetime in the Baguio City.  Well, I’ve got the chance to join some influence-rs to run and explore the potentials of eco-tourism and race-tourism in the facility of North Luzon Renewables Energy Corporation.  North Luzon Renewables operates 27 windmills with a maximum output of 81 MW to power the area and the rest of Ilocos Norte.  The place is just awesome, you have the view of the beaches of Pagudpod, the nearby mountains and the windmills.  I was really honored to be part of the group to test out the place.  There’s so much potential in the area in terms of eco and sports tourism with wide trails, an access to the beaches and magnificent views.

Java Hotel was our home for the first day of our stay.

Java Hotel was our home for the first day of our stay.

Upon arrival at the airport, our first stop was La Preciosa.  The place won me over with the ambiance and of course, my all-time favorites bagnet and dinuguan.  It was the start of our eat and run weekend.  It really does make sense having an eat and run event here with the cuisine and a lot of run-able locations in the region. We then headed to Java Hotel, which would be our home for the day.  It had a Bali and Morocco inspired interior complete with Cogon Roofs and also had a river at the side of the restaurant.

Sand Dunes

Sand Dunes

The first part of the tourism part was checking out the Paoay Sand Dunes.  We just walked along our way to the sand dunes and it was impressive. The place had a dessert like feel like Tatooine and the artworks display added to the charm and mysticism of the Sand Dunes.  It felt great running in the sand dunes and just appreciating the art displays that established the dessert-feel of the place.  I’m glad we walked and ran this part just to burn all the bagnets in our bellies.

There were also people riding 4×4 vehicles screaming their hearts out every time they had to encounter a really steep slope.  We awaited for sunset and spent some time at the beach area.

Sunset!!!

We then headed home for dinner and some drinks at Java Hotel.  It was really nice spending time with these creative bunch as we had so many ideas to share over dinner.

The Road to Pagudpod

Coach Ige and Yana

Coach Ige and Yana

The next day, I was up early and so was Coach Ige and his daughter Yana. We took the time to explore Java Hotel.  We also had breakfast and when in Ilocos, go for Longanisa.  That’s what I had for breakfast before preparing my stuff on our way to Pagudpod to visit North Luzon Renewables.

Running at PIN Road

Running at PIN Road

We took the PIN Road heading to Ilocos, which was rough roads and trails.  The whole stretch of the PIN road was about 15 kilometers of rolling trails with some steep section, which made our ride extra exciting.  PIN Road was really scenic.  It’s forested and you get to see some birds and butterflies along the way.  The route was really scenic. We were really tempted to get off our car and just run the course.  This can really rival the Salomon and TNF courses in terms of beauty and challenges.  When we got out of PIN Road, we were off to lunch.

Bergblick Restaurant is a popular stopping point for those on the road.  After our group, several groups also came in to have lunch here. It’s a Dutch restaurants and we got some really tasty chicken, meat, sausages and a lot more.  I liked that it was a totally different meal experience from the previous day.

North Luzon Renewables

Windmills!!!

Windmills!!!

After meals, we were off to North Luzon Renewables facility in Pagudpod.  We were briefed on the regulations of the place and how windmills work.  I learned so much about the technology and also realized the importance of going for renewable energy.  We then had a tour of the facility, which would be our running ground the next day.

The facility was impressive and the views were just magnificent.  You had the beaches of Pagudpod, the mountains and of course, the windmill.  It’s an up and down route, which would really be a challenge the next day.

They’ve mapped out a 10K route for us though they also have a 21K loop available.  It’s gonna be an epic run tomorrow. We then headed to Kingfisher, which would be our home for the day.

Chillin' Like A Villain

Chillin’ Like A Villain

Duyan with a beach view is just the perfect place to chill.  The beach had fine white sands and we spent the rest of the afternoon just chillin’ in the water.  Come dinner time, we had a Pizza Party.  It was make your own pizza kind of a night.

Run With The Windmills

Elevation Profile Powered by Suunto

It wasn’t really a race but they made it feel like one.  We had a gun start, a formal warm up, route marshals, water station and route markers.  It was a run around the course on a rolling terrain that had a lot of climbs.

Running around the windmill was just Epic.

Running around the windmill was just Epic.

When the race started I sprinted over the first 100 meters and yehey, I’m first on the first 100 meters. Ok, time to walk. => Well, it was a long climb after the first 100 meters so I shifted to a more conservative approach.  I walked on the climbs and ran on the descents.   The race was pure climbing on the first 3 kilometers so I just went at a consistent pace without stopping.  After the first 3 kilometers, I went more aggressive with run on the descents and to the portion of the climb just to make the walking breaks much shorter.  The views were just amazing. I had to stop from time to time to have my photo taken.  The terrain was rolling so the route remains a challenge but I like how even on a test run, we tried our best to have a good time.  I finished the 10.35 kilometers in 1:42, which was a good time for me considering that this was a hilly course.  There were finisher snacks available on the finish line.

Tree Planting

Tree Planting

We also did some tree planting after the race. Funny how the one assisting me was already doing the planting while giving instructions.  It was a nice way to cap our day by contributing to the reforestation efforts.  We then headed to the Jetty area to see where materials are delivered.  It’s always an awesome view to see the blue of the waters.

We then headed to Kingfiisher to change before proceeding to the post race hilot, which was another holistic experience. Felt so much relieved after the hilot in all aspects. We spent the rest of the day at the resort before heading back to Laoag for Dinner at the White House. They probably have the most glamorous rest room ever. After dinner, it was finally time to head home.  That was an awesome weekend.

Coach Roel Birthday Run Year 5

Coach Roel Birthday Run is now on its 5th Year. This year had a 50K and 100K as the main event and 16K, 8K and 1K as side events. I joined the 16K distance and I really enjoyed the views and also the experience.

Coach Roel’s Birthday Run has been an annual tradition. It stands out in my memories as just for the fun of it, we joined the 4 x 100 relay with several running blogger friends and ended up third (out of 3 participants =>).  As people progressed over the years, so did the race distance.  This year, it was Sinai 100, which featured a 100K and 50K category.  I joined the 16K distance. This is my first race and first workout after my first 50 kilometers Cordillera Mountain Ultra a few weeks ago.  I’m just here to have fun. I even tinkered on the idea of downgrading to 8K distance but upon seeing so many elite athletes in the 8K distance, I think I’d be much safer in the 16K distance.  The venue was Camp Sinai, which had a really nice view of the mountain range and the early morning sea of clouds.

The race starts at Camp Sinai and proceeds to the Sinai trails for the next 2.5 kilometers. The race shifts to the roads before it descends to the river next 4.5 kilometers.  After a short River Stretch, the race goes up on the next 3 kilometers to reach the roads of Timberland where you ascend for the next 6 kilometers all the way to Camp Sinai.

The Race

We arrived at the race venue at around 5 am to claim are kits.  It was nice to catch up with trail running friends at the start of the race. I was extra sleepy at the start of the race so I was quite excited for the run proper to finally start to let the adrenaline-rush awaken my senses.  The run for the 16K started at 6:40 am and with that I was expecting a really hot race.

Met Fellow SGVian Cheng before the race.

After 2 weeks away from running, I just wanted to run and see if my legs could take the beating.  I haven’t really started fast because I’ve been dealing with shin splints issues the past few months but surprisingly after my first 50K, the leg felt stronger. I went to start fast since I’d also want to jump start my system from it’s sleepy state.  There were series of descents and then we missed our turn.  We saw some runners going back from the river but since I did the Soleus Cross Country Challenge, I was thinking we’d be using the same loop so I said to some runners that there’s away out of the trail. As we got even deeper into the trail, there were runners again who were coming back.  I just said let’s just find a way back into the trail and once we hit Pintong Bukawe, we’d find our way back.  Only me, Levi and his friend went on. (Yeah, leadpack!!!) though eventually some followed us on the route and we did find our way out. Come to think of it, I did see a sign on probably the 3rd or 4th descent to turn right instead of going down.  Most of us probably got the hang of the sweet descent, which resulted to a different route.

Back on Track

There was a steep road heading to the main road.  Took it easy at this point to recover on the climb part of the previous stretch before heading to the short Casile stretch. Funny, how the other runners were now asking me for direction after finding the way out of the previous trail route.  Well, that was the last familiar stretch for me in the race.  We then headed to a short descent to Casile but instead of going down we had to hit a rolling terrain towards the left at around 4 kilometers and it was back to descent.  We were starting to speed up when a runner told us not to run as there was a slippery stretch. It turned out one runner already had a bad fall at that part.

Mara was such a trooper. After falling hard with all the bruises, she went back into the trail and went on to finish the race.

Mara was such a trooper. After falling hard with all the bruises, she went back into the trail and went on to finish the race.

Upon checking, it was Mara of Team Soleus. She passed me several hundred meters ago. She’s got bruises on the leg and arms and also had numbness in her shoulder.  We all had to stop to make sure she is ok.  Levi lent his arms sleeves to protect the wounds in the arms and also went on to tie some cloth to protect her knee.  We saw a motorcycle on the way and asked him, if she could take Mara back to Camp Sinai.  Once she was ok, we then proceeded with the race and since it was descents, we were all going at a fast pace.  I missed running fast on the descents.

Blitzing the descents - Photo by Paps Photography.

The run-able descent lasted for about 2.5 kilometers before shifting to a more technical trail on the 7th kilometer.  We went on at a consistent pace but were also cautious on the slippery part.  The river part was a bit confusing so I went with the pace of the group just to be sure if I ever get lost, I would be with a pack.  Eventually a local guided us to the route and once we saw the ribbons, we knew we were on the right track. I already felt a bit exhausted already at this point.  I remember that the plan was go easy on the race so I didn’t even have energy gels with me. Oops, I’ve been going faster than planned. When the climb started, I struggled on the climb.  It was an odd situation for me as I’ve been focusing on my climbs lately but I must have overexerted on the descents and ended up tired on the climb.  I had a few breathing breaks on the steep parts of the climb before being back to a consistent pact on the 9th and 10th kilometer of the race.

It was a beautiful route.

It was a beautiful route.

I exited the trails at the 10th kilometer at Timberland and I was happy to see some stores. I immediately bought Mountain Dew for the sugar rush and replenish my energy reserves.  It was a long stretch of climbs but it was on the road and we also had a rich view of Pine Trees along the road with several bikes sharing the route with us.  At around kilometer 11, I heard Mara’s voice and she told me that she decided to go down the motorcycle and resumed the race.  Hats off to her really.  I was also starting to run again since I wanted to catch Levi’s group.  I caught up with their Group at around kilometer 12 and went at their pace for the Timberland stretch.  We went at an easy pace just enjoying the route.  It was a moderate climb for most part but we just went on at a brisk walking pace.

The Finish!

The Finish!

There was a steep climb heading to Camp Sinai and once I’m done with the climb, I started sprinting to the finish for a strong finish.  I did enjoy the race and I’m glad to finish strong for this one as I’ve always been racing conservatively lately.  Trail running is always an adventure. Sometimes, you get lost or get hurt but it always let’s you appreciate the beauty of nature. Happy Birthday Coach Roel!

On Running Shoes

On Running Shoes was our official shoes of Team Total Fitness in 2011

On Running Shoes was our official shoes of Team Total Fitness in 2011

The return of On Running Shoes brought in some nostalgia as it’s been our official shoes when I was still a part of Team Total Fitness in 2011.  I got my first On Running Shoes in Singapore and as soon as I tried it on the treadmill, I got attracted to the soft cushy feel when I run.  In fact, I was wearing On Running Shoes when I set my 21K personal best.  At the time of hard soles and stiff shoes, On Running shoes was a breathe of fresh air.  On Running Shoes feels like running on clouds and it also has wide toe area to keep you comfortable even on the latter part of the long run.  It gives you a good bounce to push you on your next stride and it absorbs impact to reduce the wear and tear in your knees.  Unfortunately, the brand didn’t stay so long in the country though I was still on the lookout and saw a lot of improvement in the brand.  This time, they have more options for different needs of the runner.

On Running Shoes is Back!!!

On Running Shoes is officially back with the launch at Secondwind in Ayala Malls The 30th at Meralco Avenue in Ortigas last March 17, 2017.  It was a fun launch as we got to try the On Running Shoes.  I got to try the Cloud Surfer, which has the flashy color of neon yellow on the test run.  We had 3 loops at the Ultra Oval to Warm up, followed by 4 loops Speed Sets with Core Workouts in between.  If you’d been following me, you’ll know that I’ve been struggling with shin splints for months now. During the test run, I didn’t feel that familiar sting as I started to run, which just says so much with the superior cushioning of On Running Shoes.

After the workout, we returned to Secondwind for the formal launch.  It was nice to hear the views from Dan’s and ON Team.  We also had a chance to win some stuff on some games.  I did win an On shirt.  They also do have really impressive apparel line.  I’m really excited that On Running Shoes is back.  I love the color scheme.  I love the different shoe type.

Running On Clouds

Cloud

Cloud

When the first few stock of On Running Shoes came to town earlier this year, I got myself On Cloud.  It’s the lightest in their line at just 7 oz.  It’s an excellent race shoes that gives you a lightweight feel and at the same time ample cushioning.  I’ve been running on cloud since January and tried it up until a 21 kilometer run.  So far so good but the thing I love about the shoe is the look.  If you check closely, it deviates from the usual sporty shoe look but goes on a more casual look.  It’s a running shoes that look like a topsider.

When your race shoes and casual shoes become one.

When your race shoes and casual shoes become one.

Of course, not everybody can go with a racing flat like Cloud, On also has different model with different level of cushioning and support depending on your need.

  • If you go for lightweight and a more responsive shoes, there’s the Cloud Flow. It’s priced at P7,650.

  • If you want a light stability shoes for the long runs, there’s the Cloud Flyer. It’s Priced at P8,650.

The best way to check which shoe fits you best is to try it out.  On Running Shoes is now available at the following:

  • Planet Sports, Glorietta, Makati
  • Athleema (Dan’s), Makati and Bacolod
