UA Team PH Gearing Up for Test of Will Finals in Singapore

Hundreds of cross-fit enthusiasts went on to Test their Will as Under Armour held the Philippine leg of the Test of Will Event for a chance to represent the country in the Finals in Singapore on May 28, 2016.  Four deserving athletes went on to earn their slot and are raring to represent the country in the Finals.

Last April 16 and 17, 2016, Under Armour held its Philippine for the regional Test of Will event at Bonifacio Global City. Hundreds of participants dared to test their will.  They were tasked to do as many repetitions of burpees, squats, dumbbell press and pull ups (inclined pull ups for ladies) in one minute for each exercise.  It’s meant to challenge all their strength, speed, endurance and will.  At the end of the heat, Ms. Noelle Wenceslao being the top scorer with 243 reps, Ms. Zoe Pond-McPherson with 213 reps, our male representatives Mr. Derrick Mercado with 164 reps and Mr. Merwin Torres with 151 reps would be representing the country in the finals of the Test of Will to be held on May 28, 2016 at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. They will be pitted in finals against Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.  The scores they’ve registered among the highest in the regional heats so hopefully with our support and their training they can bring home  the top prize.

The Grand Final will see contestants battle it out over a series of challenges in a specially built 14-metre Tower. Each level of the Tower will contain a fitness zone with callisthenic exercises that will test mental and physical strength, endurance, determination and will. The highest overall point leader in each category wins. The overall winner will receive an Under Armour sponsorship package for 12 months. In addition, the winners in the male and female categories will be featured in leading health and fitness magazines Men’s Health Singapore and SHAPE Singapore.

The test of will event also had side events like the Subaru challenge where in you get to transfer 8 Subaru wheels from one side to the other in the fastest time.  There was also a rowing challenge where you get to complete cover a certain amount of wattage at the fastest time. It was just for fun seeing friends trying to outdo each other in the event.  The Test of Will event was an excellent way to promote fitness in the community as it was open to all comers and everybody had a chance but at the end it was those who were trained for it prevailed. Let’s all cheer for them and hope that they top the finals of the Test of Will Event in Singapore.

Team Philippines for the Test of Will in Singapore

Noelle Wenceslao

Noelle Wenceslao is the first placer in the ranking. Has the total score of 243 reps, in 4 minutes! She is a member of the Philippine Everest Expedition and one of the FIRST 3 Filipinas on Earth’s highest mountain, the Mount Everest.

Noelle has 16 years of experience in the field of Dragon Boat Paddling, 9 years of experience Technical Alpine Mountaineering and other outdoor sports like open water diving, trekking, adventure racing, etc.

She was not into sports before, until she joined the dragon boat team in UP when she was in college.

 

 

Zoe Pond-McPherson

Zoe has been competing in to Crossfit since October 2015. She is the “fittest woman” in the Philippines in Crossfit.

Besides competing for the finals of the Test of Will, Zoe will also compete in the Crossfit Games Pacific Regional alongside the top 30 fittest women in Australia and the top 10 fittest in Asia.

Zoe is also a gymnastics and mobility coach in Primal Ape Crossfit here in the Philippines. She was a cum laude mathematics degree holder and investment analyst operations, that quit her job and embarked on a career change.

 

 

Derrick Mercado

Derrick Mercado is an architecture graduate who is also a certified Crossfit Practitioner in different gyms like Crossfit Insurrecto and Kettlebell Gym.

He also engages into individual and team sports, here are some of his achievements:

  • MANILA THROWDOWN TEAM EDITION, CIRCUIT MAKATI Top 24 Qualifiers, Scaled Division

Merwin Torres

Merwin is a registered medical technologist, a fitness instructor, and a CrossFit Level 1 trainer. He usually tops on Fitness Challenges in and out of the country.
