The real problem is not poverty, it’s hopelessness. That was the message of Joey Bonifacio, Executive Director of the Real Life Foundation, at the launch of the Race for Life 2015. Real Life Foundation have been giving out hope to poor students through a volunteer-inspired program through continuous interaction with poor students. The program also helps them identify students who deserves scholarship grants. Race for Life 2015 contributes to that cause. Real Life Foundation is an educational advocacy organization dedicated to serving the poor and improving their lives through educational assistance, leadership development, and community service. Close to 300 Real LIFE scholars have graduated from university and vocational courses, including 41 who graduated last year. Since 2003, over 1,000 high school and university scholarships have been granted by Real LIFE, the social responsibility arm of Victory and Every Nation. Race for Life 2015 aims to add another 260 scholars from the proceeds of the race. Real Life Foundation believes that education is essential in helping the poor get out of poverty.
What stood out to me is the process by which they help the poor. They start their mission when the kids are still young. They group them into clusters with weekly session headed by volunteers where the kids get to play, learn, eat and get their self esteem boosted. The key is that the program is consistent and continuous as they progress in their grade level and in their further studies. It’s a process where they learn and see the importance of education as a means to get out of poverty. Thousands of runners get to contribute to the cause as Race for Life 2015 is happening at the Seaside Boulevard at the SM Mall of Asia on November 30.
This year’s race marks the eighth edition staged by Real LIFE for the benefit of its scholars.
