When it comes to films and cycling, all is not lost when the night is dark. There’s Knog lights and blinkers that keep you visible at night. They also have quodus lights designed for GoPro and other action camera to have wonderful shots at night. This is the concept of the Knog film contest where film buffs were given one to two minutes to tell a story about the night filmed at night or at low light. The film were showcased at No Ordinary Night Film Festival on June 6 Worldwide (Melbourne, Manila, Paris, Munich, London and San Francisco)
Knog
Knog was launched in March 2003 by Hugo Davidson and Malcolm McKechnie. Knog is a unique global lighting and cycling accessories brand, based in Australia currently selling their products to 46 different countries. They have the lighting product that keep you safe in the dark cycling. Knog also held a film contest last month entitled No Ordinary Night. Participants were asked to tell a story about the night filmed in low-light in one to two minutes. There are just a lot of creative things to do at night and this was a challenge to the participants. The film contest was also an excellent way to use the qudos high-powered lamp for action cams. Knog intended the festival as a celebration of adventure and creativity to its core market.
They held the Philippine leg of the “No Ordinary Night” global viewing party at 100 miles Cafe for both bike and film buffs. The one-of-a-kind film competition was part of a 24-hour, global film festival championing urban adventures. Aside from the film competition, there was also a fun alleycat race held inside Bonifacio Global City, as well as a trackstand competition hosted by State Bicycle Co. The event was also a chance for the public to see the brand’s new line of retro-themed singlespeed “fixie” bikes.
State Bicycle Co. is rider-developed and was launched in 2009 by three Arizona cycling nuts with big dreams. They saw a glaring opportunity to introduce premiere quality, aesthetically striking bicycles to the fixed gear/singlespeed market at the lowest price possible. Since then, they have sold thousands of bikes with a fiercely devout and expanding community base, growing retail stores and retailers, a growing staff, and over 500,000 Facebook likes.
The highlight of the event was the actual viewing of entries from around the world, including Melbourne, Munich, Paris, London, San Franciso, and Rio de Janeiro. Over US$ 15,000 worth of prizes was awarded to the top video entries. Judges for the film comp were Hugo Davidson (Knog CEO), Ben Welsh (M&C Saatchi Executive Creative Director), and Mat Cotye (Rolling Stone editor). It was nice seeing the video as some were impressive, some were insanely funny and some just stood out and won. It was also informative to see the judges give a step by step preview on the merits of each films before each films were shown. They also had interesting categories like most viral video and even even a WTF category that went to a really funny and unique concept in a film. (Do Check out their website for the films: No Ordinary Night) I hope that we do get entries from the Philippines in the next film contest as we have a very rich base of lifestyle athletes and film buffs who can really tell great stories through their films.
“Deciding to run a film comp celebrating those heroes of the night, those guys who are out there smashing the mold and creating awe-inspiring action videos in the dark seemed like an absolute no- brainer to us.” Davidson said.
Aside from the film showing, everybody was treated to the fine food drinks and a round of entertainment at 100 Miles Cafe. The winners of the Alleycat contest were also recognized during the night. And that’s how Manila took part in the Knog Film Festival Viewing which was also conducted in Melbourne, Paris, Munich, London and San Francisco. No Ordinary Night also showed that the night can be beautiful and armed with the proper lights from Knog, we can take over the streets and document it with a handy GoPro or Action Camera partnered with Qudos high-powered lamp.
