Read about: Newton Unveils its 2013 Line
Newton uses a unique forefoot technology that makes the most out of your stride. With a new technology comes a little more time to harness it’s functionality. The technology takes advantage of the natural mid-foot landing and uses the forefoot wedge to give an added push to each of your stride. I started training with Newton, in particular Newton Gravity a few months ago. It rewards powerful strides and natural mid-foot landing though it took me a lot of time to get used to it. Slowly but surely, running felt more natural with Newton and by then I decided to take it on a debut race.
Newton Gravity
I really like flashy shoes and the Superman colorway of the Newton Gravity is just perfect for me. 9.1 ounce is lightweight enough for a race shoe. Among the 2013 Newton Running shoes, it has the highest heel-to-toe drop of 3mm, which gives the strongest push of the toes for each stride. This rewards those with powerful strides and the harder you push yourself, the more powerful your stride will be. This is probably the reason it’s called Gravity since it uses the drop to power the forefoot wedge for the next stride.
The debut race for my Newton Gravity was the 16.8 kilometer Adidas King of the Road Distance. All I can say, it was an efficient race with me taking advantage of the mid-foot, push of the toe from the forefoot wedge technology. The movement felt more natural and rhythmic and it develops the natural running mid-foot landing so the longer you use the shoes, the more you are adept to the natural running technology. I also like how the forefoot wedge helps when it comes to hills by being a ladder that pushes you uphill and a cushion that protects your feet downhill. The shoes is also breathable which reduces excessive heat in the feet from continuous running and pounding. I also used my Newton Gravity on my indoor duathlon and the traction of the shoes with the treadmill was just perfect.
In a nutshell, here’s why I like Newton Gravity
- Flashy colorway
- 9.1 ounce lightweight
- 3mm forefoot wedge makes the most out of your stride
- breathable shoes
- great for hills
- perfect traction with treadmills
Newton Distance
While training with Newton Gravity, I also got myself an even lighter shoes in Newton Distance, which weighs in at 7.8 ounces. Though race shoes does not always constitute a faster pace but being in a run wherein you stride a thousand times those few ounces could mean a lot so I was reserving the Newton Distance for the longer runs. It comes in flashy neon green color way, designed to make you stand out in a race. Compared to the Gravity, it uses a 2 mm heel-to-toe drop which is easier to get used to but has less push of the toe forefoot but still more efficient than other running shoes. It still adds push to your strides with an even lighter material.
I’ve debuted my Newton Distance in Takbo.PH runfest for the half marathon distance. The shoes felt really light which reduced the wear and tear in my legs thus making me fresh towards the latter part of the half marathon. It’s also made of breathable materials for a much cooler feel for the feet. The forefoot wedge is also an added lift whether on flats, uphills and downhills. Like it’s name Distance, the shoes is designed for you to go the distance at an even faster pace.
In a nutshell, here’s what I like with Newton Distance
- Flashy colorway
- 7.8 ounce lightweight
- 2mm forefoot wedge adding push to each stride
- breathable shoes
- Perfect for speed and long runs
Newton is a weapon of choice for those who want to be efficient with their strides. It won’t magically make you fast or go longer but it gives back more than what you give with an added push and a lighter material. The harder you push, the faster you get or the longer you go. The longer you bond with Newton, the more you’ll develop the natural running form and makes running feel in rhythm and smoother. Of course, having the best running shoes is never a substitute to proper training but it helps add speed, endurance and power and most of all avoid injury.
How about you? What’s your weapon of choice?
