Read about: Corregidor International Half Marathon 2012 and Corregidor International Half Marathon 2011

Corregidor has a special seat in history being the Fort that guards the entry point of Manila during World War 2 and a home for the souls of the valiant people who protected the Rock.   It also holds a special seat in the hearts and minds of those who dared take the Corregidor International Half Marathon.  I’ve been in two half marathons in the island. It’s been a tradition already and remains to be my most memorable one.  It’s a race like no other that unites various type of athlete pitted not just against the distance but also pitted against the rock.  The rock is no easy course and the first time I tried it out in 2011, I cramped 3 times though I somehow found a way to finish the distance and in 2012, I run it at a managed paced and still punishing.

What makes Corregidor special?

One is the terrain with Uphell climbs that spelled with HELL and definitely feels like one. Then you have the scorching heat of the mid morning sun as a silent witness to the valiant effort of the participants.  Then you have the eerie Corregidor atmosphere that comes with its history.  Then there’s history right in front of your eyes with the Malinta Tunnel, Ruins of the Mile Long Barracks and Hospital, the Lighthouse and a lot of batteries and old structures across the course.   Then there’s nature at its finest from the scenic views in the trails and to the breathtaking site of Ocean as seen in the foot of Corregidor.  There’s also Team Corregidor taking care of you with the right amount of hydration and food supplement all over the course.  It’s a physical and mental challenge, a visual delight, an educational journey and character building session all rolled into one.  This is what makes crossing the finish line sweet and satisfying and once you’ve crossed that line, it starts the new anticipation of getting back at the island again.
