The Zombie Journals: The Kid Zombie

The Kid Zombie – Photo by Pauline Alvarez

The horde is a family.  They strike as a group and mindless as they are, they still have their instincts to rely on.  Their common thirst for flesh binds them and even in their lifeless forms they still somehow relive some of their instincts as humans.  It took a theme park to lure this addition to the horde.  At Enchanted Kingdom, there was a kid zombie that came with the Surgeon and the Bride and acting as one big happy undead family lurking in the theme park having a family day while amassing brains in the process.

The sickly kid is now the kid zombie.

The kid’s memory as a human has been unraveled to tell another journal of a member of the horde.  Airo was an orphan and a sick patient of Surgeon named James.  James, along with her bride-to-be Tezza, become attached to Airo and have treated him like their own kid.  They were the only support Airo could look forward to as he battles a heart condition.  In fact once they were married, the first thing they plan to do was to get Airo from the orphanage.

Whenever the kid zombie is around, the surgeon and the bride is always on the lookout.

Even as the wedding of James and Tezza was fast approaching, James was monitoring Airo’s welfare as his patient.  Airo would wish them happiness and was very pleased to see the only two persons he considered as parents end up with each other.  On the wedding day, as James was excited to go to the altar to finally fulfill his promise of marriage to Tezza, he got a call from the hospital.  Airo was on a critical level and they needed him to perform a complicated procedure to save Airo’s life.  At an instant, James came rushing to the hospital and due to the urgency of the situation failed to send a message to Tezza on what happened.

The surgeon has always been in the lookout for Airo

James was able to save Airo’s life and just as he was about to message Tezza.  There came a zombie in bride’s outfit who came attacking with the horde.  It was Tezza and he tried approaching Tezza but she was an angry zombie bride attacking with no provocation.  James went to get Airo and tried to save their lives but somehow they eventually parted.  Tezza was about to attack Airo but James came rushing in and took the bite as Airo was overpowered by the horde.

Animation by: Meia Ramos Alvarez

They are now all part of the horde.  They wander with the rest but they instinctively look out for each other like one family, a workaholic surgeon, an angry bridge and a playful kid.  They celebrate each outbreak with a family meal of brains and flesh.  While the kid zombie may appear harmless, the surgeon and the bride is always on the lookout for anybody who’d lay harm to the kid.  They stay together, they eat together and they instinctively hunt together making them a lethal set of zombies you wouldn’t want to meet.  At Outbreak BGC 2, Airo was a silent observer and not wanting flags but deep inside grows the desire that one day he’ll also be able to get some flags.

The horde is growing.

The North Face 100

TNF 22K Conquered

Distance: 22 Kilometers
Date: April 21, 2013

“The best things in life are not always free but this are the thing you worked hard for. I had a greater appreciation and respect for Baguio’s trails and scenic views in doing 22K of uphell torture for TNF.  I would vividly remember the humbling experience of being at the foot of the mountain looking up on the challenge at hand and the satisfaction being at the peak of the climb looking at the breathtaking scenery and the challenged conquered.”

It’s scenic Uphell.

TNF 100

Camp John Hay, Baguio City – On the last day of registration for The North Face 100 for 22K and 11K Category, I was right there in Glorietta weighing the pros and cons of joining TNF or Duaman which happens on the same day.  Somehow, running in Baguio last month in Baguio 2Wenty 1ne shifted the balance to make me decide to join TNF instead and just like that I was the last registrant for the 22K category.  Baguio would be a welcome retreat after a busy month of March.  Fast forward a few weeks later and I’m here in Camp John Hay anxious at the starting line and just determined to enjoy the run above all.  I really don’t know what to expect as even if Baguio is my hometown, I haven’t really gone through its trails.  I arrived on Friday so it would be a rest and run weekend.  This is gonna be an epic experience.

Race Course and Elevation

The race starts in the old camping grounds in Camp John Hay and proceed to the South Drive Exit and takes you all the way back to the Old Main Gate. This is also the start of Eco trails which is about two kilometers of rolling inclines before heading to the yellow trails where you get around 4 – 5 kilometers of scenic trails and mountain-views.  Halfway into the race you exit the trails via Happy Hallow and have a climb back into the other entrance of the yellow trail.  The trail becomes a bit narrower on the second half of the race for about 2-3 kilometers before entering the DENR Forestry which takes you to lush green forest surroundings for the next three kilometers of rolling descent to the lowest elevation of the race which is 1330 meters of elevation.  While the race takes you mostly to climbs of 50-60 meters elevation climbs, the last four-five kilometers takes you to about 200 meters worth of elevation from DENR Forest Reserve to Scout Barrio and back to Camp John Hay for the finish line.

The Race

Let’s get it ON.

I saw familiar faces at the start area and also some 100K runners crossing the finish who have been running for around 25-26 hours by that time.  I was a bit rusty as I had to deal with a bout of sprains days coming into the race but my goal was just to meet the 4 and a half hour cutoff and have fun and take some photos along the way.  It was festive at the start area and by 5:30 am, bang gun start was on time and off we go.

Bad Start

I was off to a bad start

Speaking of being rusty, I had a bad start with my calves stiffening as early as the first kilometer so I had to slow down. Instead of going between 6-7 minute per kilometer to take advantage of the 4 kilometer road part of the course, I had to settle down into a 7-8 minute pace just to warm the muscle up.  I was running with stiffness and pain for the first part and I also had to stretch along the way just to prevent any injury.

Hello Trails

The Trails was a Welcome Site

Entering the fourth kilometer, it was time to hit the trail.  The softer trail was a welcome pavement for my weary legs.  By this time my legs are a bit warmed up and not too stiff anymore so I was able to move a bit faster on trail.   Of course, fast on trail is not as fast as speed on the road.  This one had climbs and slides and there were some areas where I almost slipped.  It was nice being in several peaks across the trails though it was always challenging reaching some.  By the time the trails shifted to the yellow trail, the road was a bit firmer and the trails were more defined.

As the trail gets deeper, the views get better

The yellow trail was a bit easier more to navigate so I was able to overtake a few runners here though I had to stop since there were several scenic shots to take.  I was getting my rhythm.  I was running on some stretches and walking on steep uphill portions and narrow path.  I was moving forward into the race even if the climbs seem unlimited and the descents are slippery but it was what made the trail exciting.  The yellow trail was a long stretch and it felt endless but it didn’t feel dragging.  I guess that’s the effect of the scenic backdrop.

The trails were steep but the sites were scenic

The race moves back to the road for a brief part of road and guess what, it was an extreme uphill at the peak of the heat of the sun so I have to walk this stretch before heading back to the yellow trail at the top of the road.  The trails get to be narrower and you see the deep ravine so I had to navigate this slow and smart.  At the midpoint of the yellow trail you get a water break and a steep descent which is not easy to navigate because of its angle.  So I tried weaving through it diagonally and also tried walking backwards.  It was a short climb before the trail and road going downward until the DENR Forest Reserve.  It was a series of rolling descent taking you in for a long climb.

The Uphells at its Finest

The climbs was exhausting – Photo by Mark Lester Sotelo

The last four to five kilometers was a non-stop uphill climb.  Navigating 200 meters worth of elevation was not an easy task given the level of fatigue after 15-16 kilometers of going through the race.  A lot of people were huffing and puffing at this point and I was too but somehow it was a character building session.  As the climb went on endless, I walked, crawled and rested at times taking one step at a time.  With a higher altitude the air was a bit thinner so it was easier to get exhausted.  Even just walking was really exhausting at this elevation but quitting was never an option.  I’m also trying to take bigger strides so I can finish faster.   It was tough but after a struggle, I finally saw daylight as I saw the roads leading to the finish line.

TNF 2013

Going out and seeing the finish line was surreal after being in the course for 3 and a half hours.  Finish line here I come.  I went on to the finish line in 3:34 (Unofficial) with about an hour to go before cutoff.  I went on to chat with friends and other finishers and chalk up another race conquered.

The Finish

This was  not an easy one but one thing for sure this was satisfying.  I want to be back with another round at those trails and now, I have a time to beat.  See you TNF 2014!

Hit the Outdoors with Filinvest

Hit the Trails – Photos by Letsky Les

Outdoors

I’ve been a fan of the outdoors for as long as I can remember.   Whether it be a travel escapade or a personal record conquering run or an even easy bike ride, outdoors is the place I would want to be.  When I was invited to test the newly expanded trails of Filinvest along with fellow bloggers, it was an easy decision even if I had a whole day pack of activities already.  Nothing like hitting the outdoors to pump up your day.  With the Skyway in place, Filinvest was a mere 15 minutes from my residence in Makati.  While I’m more adept in road races, I have grown to love the trails for its scenery and of course, the slower and sweet pace at how a trail run is done.

Filinvest Trails – 9K worth of rolling and hilly terrain – Photo by Team J Running

The Filinvest Trails was 9.5 kilometers worth of rolling and hilly terrain with climbs up to 15 meters of elevation.  It can cater both to trail runners and bikers.  We started at a relatively flat to a downward terrain for the first two kilometers before going into a tougher climbs and descents in the succeeding kilometers.  The trail was scenic with streams, lush greens, steep climbs and descents and even a tricky hole you had to navigate.  Since we started at about 7 am, the sun was scorching but that can be resolved by proper hydration.  Overall, the trail gave a glimpse of the Garden City that Filinvest is known for while challenging us to rolling and hilly terrain.  After the trail run, we were treated to breakfast at Palms Country Club wherein we learned that the trails is just a glimpse of Filinvest plans in promoting the area as a haven for Outdoor Fun and Events.

Carless Sunday

Where to train?  This is a common dilemma for runners and bikers like me.  While you can train anywhere, you also would want a secure area with minimal traffic for training.  Filinvest is an excellent choice with the City Loop, running from one side of Corporate, Commerce, Parkway and Filinvest Avenues will be closed off on Sundays from 5 am to 10 am.  So runners, joggers, bikers and those who love the outdoor lifestyle, here’s your area for a great outdoor activities and while you’re at it, why not take the whole family for a time outdoor.  The road is yours on Sunday morning so time to have lots of fun plus you can test the trail all day long.

Difficulty Profile of the Trails

Events Destinations

Learn about the trails and I’m sure you’ll grow on to love it and this comes free on may 11, 7 AM.  Starting Line would be holding free trial trails clinic so learn about the form, posture and pacing in the open trails.  Start hitting the phones at (02) 846-0278 local 7093 as the slots are limited.  The trails would give you a taste of the outdoor lifestyle in a way that is visually enticing to the eyes and just the right amount of beating on the legs and a refreshing breath of fresh air to the cardiovascular system.

Aside from the Run Clinics by Starting Line on May 11, there will be Bike Trail event on May 18 and their biggest event for the summer is the Vaseline Men Xterra Mud Run on May 26.  The newly expanded trails makes its debut in the muddiest run of the year.  Be challenged by a 5K and 10K distance plus a lot of obstacles along the way.  It’s gonna be a test of character, it’s gonna be messy and most of all, it’s gonna be fun.

Of course, expect more from Filinvest City as they create a haven of a work-life balance in a CBD setup that has the touch of nature.  This is just the beginning as they become a more viable alternative for outdoor fun and events all under a mantra of Inspiring Possibilities.

Filinvest City, a mere 15-minute drive from Makati, is a prime development of Filinvest, a leader in property development for over 50 years. Guided by the Gotianun family tradition of integrity, quality and service, it forges ahead with renewed dynamism. The Zombie Journals: Outbreak BGC 2

Read also: Outbreak Manila  / Outbreak BGC  / Outbreak Enchanted Kingdom  / Incoming: Outbreak BGC2

“A Zombie Outbreak feels like a sprint as your heartbeat surges every so often except that one leads you to the finish line and the other one leads you to the buffet table.”

Taking the Horde’s Way

It’s been a year since that fateful day in Nuvali when I ended up as a part of the undead in my quest to stay alive.  I have since embraced the role of being a member of the horde and being an Outbreak Manila Zombie.  I ended up wandering with them towards the rainy streets of BGC and even the rain was not enough to stop our onslaught.  I came with them and created a real life horror theme park as the Outbreak spread through Enchanted Kingdom  The Zombie Journals started when I joined the horde and one by one their stories unfolded and beneath their menacing zombie presence was a back story that showed their human side.

The Journals still have a lot of chapters to be told.  The horde was growing and for us that wasn’t enough.  The wide streets of BGC was a harder course for zombies as human speed and agility can be a factor in a known racing hotspot.  We went into a horde hunt and added a few more to our ranks.  The war was brewing and the return to BGC was set in stone or in this case, a tombstone.

The Path of Zombiefication

Outbreak BGC 2

On the 13th of April Twenty Thousand and Thirteen, the Outbreak has returned to BGC to take on around seven thousand humans / runners in their favorite playground.  Three Outbreaks have made humans smarter but a fresh and hungry horde of new zombies will chase down those flags and take the element of surprise and fear to take those life lines that are protected so dearly.  The Outbreak Manila Zombies also came with the experience from recent Outbreaks to once again unleash havoc in the race course.

Carry a Big Stick and Take All the Flags you Want

I came in my baseball zombie jersey and wielded a bat and I felt those flags were home base that I needed to chase in order to make a score.  I was stationed along the International School area along with the other Outbreak Manila Zombies, which also had the hunted house. We also had access to the maze and to the garter obstacle.   I love the area since it was a bit dark which gave me an added element of surprise.  Since the Haunted House was a U-Turn slot, the humans had to deal with us twice.   BGC would always be the hardest Outbreak because there was a lot of leg room to evade zombies but that doesn’t mean a zombie can’t have fun.    I didn’t just chase people just for their flags but I just love chasing people and give them a run for their life. The chase is always much sweeter than the flag and at times, people would just give in and give up their lifeline.

My Zombie-fed Friends Mascy and Diane with Me and the Psycho Prisoner

I even saw my friends Mascy and Diane and since they were already Zombie-fed by the time they reached me, there was no urgency to chase them.  I can’t say the same thing to another friend of mine who still had his life intact though.

Chasing Jeff’s Flags

There was a break in the middle for us to digest our flags and by the time the waves after the break were unleashed, it was time to bring out a more vicious zombies.  I also dropped the bat to add more speed and two free hands to capture more flags.  It was a feast as the waves came in, the flags that came to us were dwindling but we still chased them down real hard.  As much as it was fun scaring people, it was also tiring chasing people for hours plus we also get hit at times by accidental or not karate chops, paper cuts because of life flags knotted and even pushed down by some aggressive runners.  All in a days work.   You just have to deal with the hazard when you are part of the undead as nobody goes into war and expect to be unscathed.  There were also a lot of human accidents from sprains to cuts to bruises and there was even one who fainted all for the sake of survival.  The concept of an outbreak has always been to enjoy the process of getting the scare of your life.

Back from the Undead

It was a relief that the outbreak was over as we do get to rest our dead muscles and of course, after a feast as big and successful as Outbreak BGC 2, we like to savor our meals.  It’s also the chance for the humans who survived to lick their wounds and prepare again for future Outbreaks and as to where and when that would be, your guess is as good as mine.  Wandering zombies are not the most reliable source of getting information.   Outbreak BGC 2 is now part of the Journals and  fresh chapters will be written once more as the survivors await and prepare for the next Outbreaks.

Francramon.com is a proud social media partner for Outbreak BGC 2.  While my zombie self can’t do much but stare at you blankly grunting endlessly while salivating over your life flag, my human self would want to thank those who supported the event from those who read the incoming post to those who joined in my horde hunt and to the thousands who had the scare of their life.  Francramon.com also would want to thank Runtertainment for making me a part of the event and to my fellow Outbreak Manila Zombies for the camaraderie and support.  Looking forward to working with you again in the future Outbreaks.

How about you?, Tell Us About Your Human and Horde Experience in the comments portion below.

Me and my Newton

The easiest way to understand a shoes is to try it out and thanks to Newton and Runnr, I was able to get the Newton Gravity which is for Neutral Runners and I also love the colorway which reminded me of another famous logo.

Me and my Newton

The colorway reminded me of Superman’s Red, Yellow and Blue Colors.  I probably have shoes for every shoe brand & technology and wearing Newton for the first time felt different since you actually feel the forefoot lugs at the bottom of the feet.  I tried running with Newton Gravity and it all made sense.  The forefoot lugs actually acts as a support when landing mid foot and then acts as a lever for an added push of the toe for your next stride.  It felt more natural running with Newton with the extra lift reducing the stress factor of each stride.  I was then running faster than my normal pace and the wear and tear is not much because of the support.  I’m definitely doing more runs with my Newtons and can’t wait to try it out in my next road race.
